Here's another good thing to have on hand as well. Reuse a spray bottle, fill it up with apple cider vinegar and coconut oil (I guess a 1:1 distribution works; I also advise getting the natural kind of coconut oil (costs a bit more, but should be more effective; not to mention said oil also has other health benefits aside (look up some of them (including for the apple cider vinegar; especially for the flu season, and recipes that use it to maximize it's use/effectiveness))), and spray it where insects and spiders frequent. It'll act like a repellant, as well as a slick surface for (not) climbing across, limiting where they can go in the process.
Also, if you want to slow down or stop a spider, spray that on them directly, and take a shot.
So far, it's been effective against the hand-spiders around my house, and kept the ant and roach population out of my business.
Furthermore, to adjust it's effectiveness, or to clean the nozzle, leave it out in the sun. The low melting point of the coconut oil should make keeping the sprayer spraying not a problem.
Just remembered, minor caution: It won't leave the best odor behind when used, especially as a repellant. So don't go crazy spraying it all over the place. Same goes about leaving behind an oily residue (can make a tile/linoleum floor slippery).
