Spiders? Spiders.
« on: September 27, 2013, 11:36:13 pm »

Ladies and gents, it's time to move all of the spider talk and pictures to this thread. Mostly because I have a question, and I'm kind of freaked out by the pictures when they appear in the happy thread, and that's not very happy.

Anyway, since my Google-fu is weak, I ask all of you spider-lovers a question. I saw a new type of spider in my apartment, and I'm wondering what the hell it is. It was small, just less than the size of a penny, and all white, with a large (for its size) white abdomen. For those of you who aren't aware and are too lazy to check my profile, I'm in lower Michigan.

I beseech you, oh great and knowledgeable Bay12, what did I just kill, and how much XP do I get for it?

What kind of environment was it in, and did it live in a web?

If not, can you better describe the shape of its abdomen? Did it have any semi-straight edges, or did it have a pointed butt-- that kind of thing.

Judging by the size you describe it as, I think you'd only get XP if it were a swarm.

My guess so far is that it is probably one of these guys. but if the OP comes back and tells me it was living in a big spiderweb, then it's some kind of orb weaver, and I need to look deeper.

From your description I would go and say crab spider, but I don't know much about american spiders. also, crab spiders like flowers best.

No XP for you either, unless it's venom is actually dangerous or it has a CR.

Crab spider is another good guess-- thats why I asked about the shape of the abdomen, and if it had any angular edges. Crab spiders have a very specific shape. Asking about the location it was found in would also help narrow it down, as like you said, crab spiders like to live in flowers and foliage. (they can also be nearly any color, from pink to green, to white, to purple.)

The comb footed spiders I linked to are commonly found in dark, undisturbed places, clinging to walls and cobwebs.

There are some species of orb weaver however, that have bloated, offwhite/tan abdomens, in the size range the OP is mentioning.  Without considerably more to go on, I cant reliably determine the kind of spider, let alone a species.

I love the Nananana Makaki'i. They like my lanai a lot. Geckos also love the spiders and my lanai for different reasons.

It could be an egg sac it's carrying, which would explain the large size and lack of colour.

Or it could be something completely different, because I don't know much about spiders, except their inherent and terrifying awesomeness :D

It was in the upper corner of my bathroom behind the door, in a wispy, small web. The abdomen on it looked a little smaller than the comb footed spider, but that otherwise looks to be the one. The rear on it was a little pointed, but the abdomen was not angular. It also probably had no CR, as I took it down with a broom.

Google has a function where you put pictures into the picture search bar, so that might be of help.  Don't know much about spiders, other then small ones have begun to invade my house. I tolerate them because they are not technically insects, and eat the flies.

I don't know how well it would do with a smear of spider paste...
