The art of bowing
« on: September 26, 2013, 07:43:50 pm »

Aight, so after learning to play guitar, which I love, i've also decided to try and learn the violin, I hear it's one of the hardest instruments to learn, therefore I present the issue to Bay12: Should I get a violin instructor? or book? or something else? I already have a cheap student violin, I just need to replace the G string, which is a very fragile creature I found out much to my chagrin.

Of course feel free to regale me with your success stories, etc.

any and all help appreciated!

I came here hoping to learn how to bow. I am sorely disappointed.

well, you grip the bow with your 1st three fingers and your thumb, then you use your pinky to counterbalance the bow so you have better control, then moving your wrist and your forearm (not your upper arm or shoulder) gently slide the bow across the strings of the violin.

If you meant you wish to learn how to fire a bow, then you firmly grip the bow with your hand, then put an arrow into the notch in the middle of the bow, next adjust your grip to the back of the arrow and draw the string back, finally loose the arrow in your enemies general direction.

If you meant you wished to learn how to bow to superior simply bend forwards, general praise is also appreciated.

I've been practicing this but I keep falling over. Assuming that is not an intended part of it, any tips?

Nah, that's all good.
If your nose isn't planted in the dirt at my feet, you ain't bowing low enough. :P

On-topic: I'm afraid I can't really help. I only had a brief period of violin instruction as a small child.
If you are looking for a teacher, it may be best to shop around. ...Man, that's not really helpful at all.

Well, while I appreciate all the helpful tutorials on showing the proper respect in the face of our benevolent overlords, I would also appreciate some help on deciding how to go about learning the violin.

Respectfully bow to a violin teacher?

(Seriously, not getting a teacher is usually a bad idea. I can only speak for pianists, but every one of them who claims to have "taught it themselves" is basically worthless.)
