ADV Mode - What exactly happens on retirement?
« on: March 04, 2008, 04:39:00 am »

Hi!

Just as the title says, I am wondering what exactly happens upon retirement. What happens to the character, can I reactivate him/her, can I meet him/her later in either fortress or adventurer mode? If I can later get information about him/her in adventure mode, what are the things that can happen? May he/she marry once retired? Children? Political career?

I dunno about most of that, but you can reactivate them.  When you go to start a new adventurer, in addition to the "Human from [civ name]" options you'll have "[Adventurer] in [Town you retired in]" or something like that.  I haven't reactivated any of mine (I figure they've earned their peace, as opposed to all the rest of my adventurers who end up with eternal peace, sometimes in pieces), so I don't know if they'll have misplaced their gear or anything.

Don't know about marriage/etc. but you CAN resume your old characters later.  You can also meet them later in adventure mode.
Also, (at least in an older version) badass PCs can gain political office.  My extremely advanced elven assassin became some sort of enforcer to the King of the human lands he retired in.  I was always sort of afraid that the humans would get pissed at me and send him to lead an attack (I'd have rather faced a swarm of dragons, actually) but this never happened, so I don't know if they will ever show up at fortress sites later.
EDIT: Also, your old character's gear should still be intact.

From what I've read, they keep all of their items, and in fact can be met and then recruited into your party, which if you have the time can lead to an entirely custom made party.

It's the only way to get a decent group until mercenaries come back.  Of course, if you die it's ruined, everyone teleports to random cities.

But you could always go back and re-recruit them with a new character...

... if you manage to find them =). Sometimes it's easier to create new comrades.

Also I had a mad idea about creating the Drizzt Do'Urden's party =).

Hi!

Thank you for that interesting information.

Does anyone know if the political career is still possible?

Hell knows, actually.

It was possible for someone to achieve a high status in one of those pre-3D versions by completing a lot of quests.

I dunno, maybe if you level your character to insane heights, complete a carpload of quests, then retire and kill the current leader with a speargoblin... MAYBE you could be promoted to be the country's king. Given enough time, who knows? Toady probably does, but he won't share that kind of info.
