Crutch walking with no feet?
« on: September 26, 2013, 03:36:12 pm »

My adventurer just lost his second foot and I thoguht 'Oh good now I need less armour and can move faster'. I have two crutches - one in each hand and also am a legendary crutch walker.... But I can't get my dwarf to stand up!

Am I cursed now to forever crawl?

Well, you don't have any feet. Unfortunately, that means you're stuck with crawling.

Wow, how have you lost two feet and survived? My adventurers are rarely lucky enough to lose a hand, they all either end up being untouchable Baldur-like badasses or they're instantly brained by whatever is around the corner and in a bad mood today.

It's really disappointing, I'd like to have a one-handed/armed dude (that doesn't just have use of one arm because of bullshit nerve damage).

My adventurers always end up losing their legs to spinal damage. One was actually a vampire that had their upper spine destroyed, so I escaped only to find that my adventurer was consigned to an embarrassing death or perpetual retirement. I didn't even take the quest to hunt them down, it would have been too sad. He had been my best adventurer to that point, as well.

If you wanted, you could retire an adventurer, make a note of their location, create another adventurer, then find the first one and cut off a hand/arm while they're sleeping. They might bleed to death, but that's just an occupational hazard.

The wiki seems to suggest otherwise:

"In adventurer mode crutches can be used to walk when one or both legs are disabled. The associated skill is crutch-walking, and this can be trained to increase movement speed while using a crutch"

That's not really the harsh battle I'd hope for or the 'placing my hand in the mouth of a giant wolf to gain its trust' kind of thing I was hoping for...

I think the wiki means that if the legs are disabled, not missing.

In the RAWS, feet have the [STANCE] tag (IIRC), which means they are required to stay upright, crutch or no crutch.
Besides, imagine how you would use crutches IRL; you always need one foot, even if broken, to maintain your stance, so DF isn't being unrealistic here...
If you wanted to change this, you could experiment and remove the [STANCE] tag from body_default, but it may prevent creatures standing completely...

It's a shame there are no wheelchairs to aid your predicament - maybe try a minecart?  ;D

The wiki isn't guaranteed to be correct. If you conclusively find game behaviour that contradicts what the wiki says, you can correct the wiki. Being scrupulous with your testing before editing is strongly encouraged...

I had an adventurer or two blessed with two disabled (not missing) legs and am quite certain that they couldn't stand with crutches. Unfortunately, i'm not 100% sure, not least because the adventurers have long since been retired and the world in question scrubbed.

Try fast travelling. It takes a decent amount of crutch-walking skill to stand after the injury, so train up a bit first. You always start standing upon exiting fast travel, so if you still fall over despite 2 crutches and legendary skill, then that would be good evidence against.

I really love when a guy loses his feet and first thing he thinks is "good, now I need to wear less armor".
