[OOC Thread] City of Secrets: A Magical Criminal RTD
« on: September 26, 2013, 01:09:58 pm »

IC Thread
Maybe you've had it since you could remember. Maybe you only got it recently. Either way, the facts are staring you right in the face: you have magical powers.

It's slightly ridiculous to admit. Surely the fact you can turn into a wolf is just a weird disease? That whole throwing a fireball thing was probably just a fluke of physics. Hell, drinking blood is something everyone can do. But eventually you have to stop denying it, and let it sink in that you are not truly human. However, you know what makes this really depressing?

You aren't the chosen one. You aren't in an amazing medieval world. You're trapped in a dead-end job in a dead-end city with a dead-end life. You've done a few conjobs, a few robberies, a few murders, just to get some cashflow in to pay the rent. You're desperate. You're getting more so every day. But with these powers... maybe you can change that.

Welcome to the City of Secrets. Try not to get yourself killed or arrested, and you should do fine.

Summary

This is an RTD about being a criminal with magical powers. This should play like a combination of Grand Theft Auto and the World of Darkness. Here's the rules and the character creation.

Relations are decided after all players are gathered. Seven players would be nice, and this isn't first come first serve. I will be judging entrees by quality.

Sheet done, here you go. Hope I make it. If there's an issue with the power, let me know.

Name: Tim Gerber

Appearance: a medium-height man in his early twenties, has short, dark brown hair and a fairly handsome face, though it shows telltale signs of weariness and worry. He has a slim build, and he moves and acts very deliberately, particularly when with people he doesn't know.

Biography: Tim is not an evil man, or at least he likes to think so. He's never killed anyone or stolen anything, and the thought of going to prison frightens him, to be honest. He fears a great many things in this world, and he really wouldn't be ashamed to admit it to anybody he doesn't directly work with. It's just that the fear of being nobody at all, of dying in a rathole cold and alone, of never amounting to anything in life, simply isn't something he can live with. Especially not since he got powers - it was just two months ago, during one of his drug-related turns. Man, he hasn't used since that day... at least, not conventionally. He can scarcely even remember it aside from a few impressions, but what he does remember isn't good. Could it have been a sign?

He doesn't know, to be honest. And he knows a lot of things and a lot of people now. He got a head start into "the business" courtesy of his significant other and occasional dealer, Terrance, but that was just a start. He's proven to be not too shabby at getting and passing stuff on. And he's even starting to work toward what one might consider an actual score. Maybe he and Terrance will be able to move to a better place soon if this works out. God, Tim sure hopes so. Whatever money Terrance gets, he spends on "goods" and "expanding the business" (which he's argued with him about on more than one occasion), and his own job has scarcely paid well enough to afford even the tiniest investments so far. He hopes his hard work and effort will pay off. He shudders to think about his future if it doesn't. Terrance likes to live dangerously, Tim is afraid to say.

Class: Dealer (Supply)

Power/Feat: Ritual: through the preparation of a special oil that includes within its list of ingredients such things as cocaine, his own blood and several other not too exotic ingredients (the process itself is quite arcane and Tim isn't sure he can rightly explain it - it's mostly based on intuition and various rituals that feel right, in a process that can take up to twelve hours of time, depending on his mood and clarity of thought) and the application of said oil to his eyes, ears and nostrils, Tim can attain superior magic-assisted intuition that borders on clairvoyance, though it does not last longer than two hours (he usually makes enough oil for three to six proper uses).

Job: he works as a valet at one of the more upscale hotels in town.

Burden: to be able to provide for himself, to do what he is good at, to have a decent life for himself and his roommate/boyfriend/drug dealer (on-and-off in the latter case) Terrance. Terrance is far more assertive than Tim, and has quite the temper, which is paired with a certain lack of patience. Thus, he has not been the most successful man, and his and Tim's relationship has suffered as a result, though not to the point of being actually dysfunctional.

Making a sheet, but I'm not quite sure what you're looking for in the power section.  Do we pick what kind we want and you create one to fit, or what?

You pick what kind you want. For Spells, you get a randomly generated spell at the start. For rituals, you can basically do whatever you want, but you also have to note what kind of action you have to do when you run out of mana.

Not really 100% sure about his ritual or effect just yet, um.

Gotcha.

Name:  Jimmy Nortern
Biography: Jimmy's a tall, skinny thirtysomething with unremarkable features.  He never really had any true motivation in life except to take care of his little brother, Dale.  Dale is mentally incapable of taking care of himself, and lives in a group home where he is poorly treated.  Jimmy loves his little brother, and spends all his spare money on helping him.  Unfortunately, there isn't much spare.  He never went to college and never could get a better job, so he's been stuck working in a convenience store.  On the side to help pay the bills, he's been acting as a supplier to a local gang, just trying to make ends meet.  He desperately hoped for something to change, so he could do something wonderful for his brother- he didn't care about breaking laws or hurting others, as long as Dale was okay.

Then the magic came, and everything changed.

Class: Dealer / Supplier
Power/Feat: Spell
Job: Convenience store attendant.  Crappy pay, crappy hours, but at least you meet interesting people.
Burden: His mentally disabled brother, who can't take care of himself.  He Needs to Get Rich, so he can fulfill his dream of the two of them living on a private island with all their needs met.

Looks good, everyone. HarryBaldman, one thing. That power seems a bit magical, but I could work with it. Is your guy just unusually able to notice subtle things, or...?

It is supposed to be a magical power, yes. Essentially, it's improved magic-assisted intuition. How improved it is and how the magic works exactly - that's all up to you, really, as I'm not sure what I'm really put in there. I could just write in Ritual if it doesn't work.

EDIT: In fact, that's what I'll do. I finally understood how to fill out that field!

Don't forget how to recharge your powers.

Don't forget how to recharge your powers.

Do I need to specify that myself? As in, come up with a ritual?

I'm afraid so. For clarification, a ritual's like a werewolf turning into an uncontrollable wolf, or a vampire sucking blood: it's the downside of being a supernatural creature. Hence why ritual is more creaturish while spells is more mageish.

Right. Added something. Does that work?
