Sounds like an easy reclaim then.  All that destroyed you is grief.  Grief doesn't tend to emerge from the depths and eat reclaim groups.

Take it back.  Make it a joyful place. Grandma Urist would've wanted it that way.

that reminds me,
what happens if you reclaim a fortress that was destroyed by awaking the concentrated !!FUN!! deposits? Are they still... "chilling", as it were, in your fortress waiting to kill everyone who comes back?

some of em will be.  It's not to obad if you had the forthought to seal off the surface, you just have to be careful not to breach into the old tunnles till you have a way to deal with them.   Other times they sometimes wont come pathing to your dwarves right away on embark.  Other times they are already on the surface and your 7 new dwarves have much fun as soon as you unpause.

100% of the HFS you let loose (and failed to kill) will still be there, and it's actually much, MUCH worse to have sealed the fortress off from the surface prior to its destruction. Reason being that the game populates units that should reside in the fortress form the exterior (surface) inwards. So if you cut off the surface from the fortress and the game can't populate the interior of the fortress, all those residents will be out on the surface with you and thus much more concentrated.

Then again, I'd say if you lost a fortress to the HFS you should be expecting to take 20-30 reclaim parties to put a dent in their numbers and survive long enough to survive more than a week. Or assault it with a legendary adventurer and a crew of legendary dwarves you train in another fortress.

I stand corrected on the sealing.  To be honest I tend to seal the HFS in prior to the final colapse and so tend to end up in a mostly recoverable situation asumeing the tantrum spiral from my military geting wiped out dosent finish things off.  Didnt know that tidbit about remaining monsteres populating from the outside in however.  Explains the one time I tried to seal things off and the reclaim was really hairry, though I'd just missed an exit.

I tend to avoid reclaiming.  For one, the game respawns a new batch of Clowns every time the map is reloaded like that, leading to a tiresome amount of Fun.

And two, it just seems like bad mojo for a group of dwarves to try and resettle the grave-yard of so many dead.

If I did reclaim, it would be to seal the fortress and place a small shrine to placate and commemorate the dead, only to abandon once more.

Would it be possible to build a safe house before abandoning, placing it so that the reclaim party's wagon starts inside it? It'd probably need access to the map edge for it to be a valid spawn location, but that could be handled by drawbridges if it's the only problem. Then you'd have to hope that no unfriendly creatures also start inside the safe house...

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Will the wagon always spawn in the same spot?  might be possible to build a small hut around that area with a bridge and lever already hooked up so the dwarves can just seal it off right away.

Not in exactly the same spot, but pretty close.  Here's a shot of the surface of Safetyglove (one embark, 3 reclaim attempts so far, 1 wagon dismantled successfully).

I for one, am amused by the nicknaming of a dwarf as 'echo 12', is that for military management?

"Charlie 2 here, echo squad is completely batshit and throwing barrels of tallow at the mayor who's huddled under his desk, what should I do?"

"Nothing, he's having a meeting"

It's too keep my dwarves organized.

Each migrant wave gets various designations of "alpha," "bravo," "charlie," etc.  Each dwarf from each wave gets a numerical designation starting from 0.

So, my original starting dwarves are Alpha 0-6.  The first migrant wave is Bravo 0-#, the second wave is Charlie 0-#, etc.

Children are kept organized according to their parents.  If Alpha 4 and Echo 12 make a baby, then that baby would be named A4E12.0, and his younger brother would be named A4E12.1, and their younger sister would be A4E12.2, and so on.

I've never had a fort last long enough for the names to get much more complicated than that.

Intresting. I rarely do more to organize my dwarves beyond doing a mass custom proffession each time a wave comes in (hauler) and updating a dwarfes proffession if I assign them to a specialist role.  I'll sometimes tag military by their enlistment year and weapon to help track training goals but not much else.

I still think the proper response to having all the inhabitants of the fortress start acting like the place was bedlam asylum, is to lock them up in their cell --er.. "Rooms" until they come to their senses.

If you still fail, and have to reclaim, then first things first is to slab all the ghosts before they start causing more madness in the place.

I've never had more than 25-ish dwarves, which is small enough for me to remember their names but big enough that I have to think for a second. I usually know who the starting seven are because they're the first ones to get bedrooms.

A well-loved dwarf died of old age.  The fort crumbled away, by the way.

Wait, you had a fortress ending tantrum spiral just because a dwarf died of old age ?

You won DF, just right now.
