I enjoy beer, though these days I drink mostly what the local student pub has available, which usually is Budvar or weisenphaler (I think, spelling might be way off) since they give you the most beer for your money.

On one memorable occasion, someone bought some strange smoked beer from there, and it tasted salami. I think that bottle was given to someone else half a dozen times. It was nice enough the first few sips, then you just couldn't take it any more. It was a very strange beer, shame I can't remember what it was called.

Leffe (any kind) is also good, and is frequently praised by my local Belgian. I also like IPAs though I agree that they clog up the shelves of Systembolaget a bit much at times. Of course, one should never forget that a cold Corona with a slice of lime is awesome in the summer.

I love many styles of beer.  Some of my favorites:
- the local Foothills People's Porter, one of my favorite dark beers any time of year
- New Belgium La Folie, the perfect sour for sipping with a friend
- Bell's Oarsman, nicely tart for summer afternoons
- been digging the Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest this year
- Russian River Consecration, only had it once at Eulogy in Philly, but it made an impression
- Old Speckled Hen.  It's like dessert!

Foothills as in northeastern Colorado? Only bringing it up since you also mentioned New Belgium, whose brewery is a ten minute drive from here. Tour de Fat and all that.

I don't enjoy it, so obviously no one does. Just saying that they probably know better than you whether they had fun.
I just don't think getting shitfaced, getting the clap from some stranger, and forgetting the whole thing sounds very fun.

I prefer laid back atmospheres and getting a peaceful drunkenness in that, over the usual bar/tavern scene. Worked in one long enough (and did my run with that scene after working, with old buddies and coworkers) to know how that is. What's nice is having a small group of buddies to lay back, listen to good tunes, and chill out.

A good idea of what I mean is stopping by one of the local taverns that have a fire pit for when it gets cold out, listen to a good band, and chill out by the fire, talking about general bullshit. Heck, getting a good buzz, and hanging out with plug.dj is a nice alternative, although it's behind walls of text and music videos, and not so face-to-face. On the plus side, a good 12-pack is still cheaper, by value, than a few drinks at a tavern; not to mention, I hear some good tunes that are uncommon these days to listen to.

Most of my alcohol-related fun involves me finding a beer (two if I can, but selection's running thin) I've never tasted before, and buying one for me and one for my dad each week, and we try a new beer over supper on Fridays.

No, North Carolina.  This is the beer I mentioned.

As a Belgian, I mostly stick to Belgian beers, because, well, why go to the trouble of buying imported crap when you have so many good beers around? I like Chimay Bleue for a stout beer, Kwak or Corne du Bois des Pendus for a lighter stuff, Malheur 12 (Litterally Unhappiness 12. How something with 12% alcohol could cause unhappiness is beyond me) when hanging out.

My "cercles" (Think fraternities, but organized by faculty and with more folkloric stuff) organize a two week event twice a year where you can get over 400 different kinds of Belgian beer for really cheap at them, so I usually spend those two weeks trying one or two new beer a day.

Rule one) Cider can never come in a can, it just ruins the taste, makes it all metallic taseing.
Rule two) You can't drink beer properly from a bottle or a can, beer need to have room to flow to taste right.
Rule three) If you stuck picking a beer at the bar just go for the one with the funny name, Trouble At' Mill is a fine beer.
Rule four) If it comes in a can drinking it at the pub is a waste of money and opportunity, have a local brew instead.
Rule five) Avoid Cider the names with strom lighting white hammer or strip in the name, it will be waighted down runn off from the paint stripper factory you know the stuff that's not strong enough to be own brand vodka, still tastes like  paint stripper thou .

That's just like, your opinion man. But I'm an alcoholic.

This whole "local brew" thing from the USA interests me, however. Although smaller breweries are on the rise here in Europe, IPA's are still very rare and supposedly very tasty.

They are very hoppy.

My preferred varieties have always been on the darker, maltier end of the scale, between amber ales (especially scotch ales) and stouts.

Alright, beer thread. I need your help.

Family's requested some interesting beers for Christmas. Their specific suggestion, stuff out of the Ancient Ales line is not available anywhere nearby, nor via the Internet as far as I can tell. I do not love my family well enough to make a 10 hour beer run.

Anybody know of anything in a similar vein that can be ordered online? I'm certain that alcohol shipping regulations will complicate matters, but it does at least seem to be vaguely possible to do. We seem to be looking for something that's got spice, fruit, honey, or some other addition beyond standard beer ingredients.

Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Mythbusting time: American beer does not, actually, contain less alcohol then foreign beer. It's just measured differently.

I could mail you some. It wouldn't be weird beer-with-other-stuff-in-it, but a selection of the finest* German brews. Especially Kölsch, since it's brewed near where I live - it has a rather mild, sweet flavor, unlike most kinds of beer.

*Well, finest I can get at the local supermarket, which is still damn fine.

That would almost certainly be illegal. The United States, alas, has tons of arbitrary rules about the transport and sale of alcohol, and I'm reasonably confident you need a license to ship it across state lines (much less through customs). I could be wrong on this, but I expect it's really not worth getting into.

I do appreciate the offer though! They'd probably enjoy it.
