Technically, a Von Neumann Machine only applies to a self replicating space probe. but the term watered down tremendously.  Besides, it's not because it has a fancy name that gets thrown around in science fiction a lot that it's impossible.

Why wouldn't we just make a robot that can fix other robots, and other robots of its own type? No need for a human to fix a robot.
Thats exactly von neumann machine  8) And why I now, as a boss, should pay your welfare?
Because the revolution will not be civilized? Point is, why not. After all, as a boss, you make money by selling goods to the public, if the publix has no money to buy, most of your goods are useless, and you risk a pretty high risk of social unstability.

It's never is. We projecting our reality to future. Which is stupid. When you read Jules Verne, you see all the funny. There is not going to be capitalism and democracy in future. It's going to be something new. With all that ridiculous technology we bound to have something new. Nobody ask us why. Just because.

Also, the main reason we haven't cured cancer isn't because it's not profitable. Who wouldn't buy that from you at pretty much any price?
Yeah, no. We are curing cancer. Survival rates have improved essentially across the whole board. And we're starting to hit 100% survival rates on the more easily cured ones.

Take breast cancer, for example. Stage 0 and Stage 1 have hit 100% 5-year survival, and only the worst of the worst why-the-fuck-didn't-you-go-to-a-doctor Type IV is still below 50% survival, and even then your odds are still one-in-five.

That wasn't exactly the case even ten years ago. In another ten, breast cancer might well be relegated the "trivial" column.

Most political systems have remained consistent in some form through the 3 eras humanity existed. They don't appear out of nothing, but build upon themselves.

Huh. Then his name means "John from New-Man".

Gee, Germans are weird.
Hungarian actually.

Certain types of brain tumours are also almost cured. Genetically modified Viri tunred out to be quite efficient in hunting it down.

Then we have nanoparticle chemo being in the work too.

I bound to believe it's not industry standard, it's enthusiasts. Whole industry is against cure, but lifespan medication. For profit. And I am infuriated we not colonizing stars, I may be immature idiot, but we should do it as priority to fight overpopulation. We dont have money? I dont believe it. Priorities. Just priorities.

Overpopulation isn't going to be a thing. You're going to be capped in a few decades and then probably either stagnate at around nine or ten millards, or decrease in numbers.

Cancer research isn't cheap. This is all industry funded research. After all, having a patent on a lifesaving technology is very lucrative.

It's not about the money, it's about the energy. Even with hyperefficient rockets or a space elevator, moving a significant percentage of human population to space (Just into low orbit, no air, food or return ticket provided) is way beyond our current energy reserves.

Space exploration is not going to help with overpopulation.

Which is still too much, but anyway.

Humanity already invented agriculture, loooong time ago, why do you think it's stop? Grain initially was not readily available source of energy, but we made it work, why do you think we can't brew food from, say, oil? Or shit, like japanese scientists did? )

Because humans have a well-recorded history of matching their birth rate with their death rate. That's why most of the population growth remaining is in the developing world.

It's not food, it's sociological. For a long time, population growth was limited by large numbers of deaths cancelling out the births. Sometimes, deaths dropped, resulting in a population spike, then more deaths. For the first time in a long time, it's birth's that are dropping, not death's.

Also, making food from human extrements is a fairly old technology. It's known as natural fertilizer.

Actually, I think NASA was behind the Fish Tumor Steaks, equally uneaten.

You really believe that medication is so pricey? No, it's people who ready to pay that much, raising prices (hiho free market). I have a friend who pay for his stomach cancer for 14 years already. As a mere counter. His wage is slim.

We spend incredible amount of oil on personal vehicles. It's huge and vast. In current Moscow is absolutely transparent. Everyfucking shmuck having a vehicle. I go out of my condo and I see 20 cars parked outsdide. 3 hours traffic jams? I have all money to have my own POV. But I prefer to waste that time reading books in bus/metro. I passionately hate POV's. Not because I am green, or I care about planet health, I just hate it's unefficiency. One person with shitty vehicle deniyng me from biking/breathing freash air/transportation. Don't you think all that resources can be rerouted for humanity betterment? I will sit on the first ship to another planet if it's was possible. Current consumerism is atrocious. Ofcourse it's an answer. But who cares.

You serious? Agriculture had a spike for sure. It's a direct famine vs hunger. I saw a graph intimes of Roman empire. It's was spectacular and definitive. Now you say that was sociological? All that grain? Seriously? Why it was such big of a deal with grain from Egypt? I lost you here :) It's was biggest popraise in the human history

Overpriced medication is mostly limited to the US and a few other nations. Most of Europe has nationalized healthcare and cost up to 5 times lower.

I really mean it when I said we don't have enough energy. Total weight of humanity is about 400 million tons. So say, even if we launch only 1%; we still have to move 4 million tons up there. Let's take Mars, as that is the closest location. Optimal situation has 20.2 km/s delta v change. With a standard rocket engine, that'd amount in a 141 kg fuel to 1 kg payload need. So even with a space elevator, you'd use most of humanities remaining fossil fuel reserves.

Major miscommunication here. Today's drop off is sociological, all the others were not. It was simply a matter of abundant food reducing deaths, increasing growth, untill the empire collapsed and population lowered.

Also, pretty sure the biggest population raise was during the Industrial Revolution. We went from 1 billion to 6 over a small 2 centuries.
