Just want to say, that while I could stand the kinda bad graphics and having to use a controller.... I now utterly regret buying this game to hear that a main feature that they were pushing on steam as a selling point is going to be paid DLC....

The new DLC should be titled "People who will spend money on originally promised features [upwards of 2 years ago] that were never implemented, enabling/encouraging a terribly slow and obviously inept-at-bugfixes developer team while at the same time lauding them for finally getting anything resembling an update completed"

See: Forum thread.

I will never support UndeadLabs in any product they release again.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

I am still pissed I bought this. I did my research before buying it, but somehow managed to miss (perhaps because it is nowhere advertised and only appears in complaints) the whole time progression system. I feel like it turns what is supposed to be a sandbox into a frustrating arcade game. I can spend hours raiding and building a base, log out, come back and find everything gone and half the team dead.

Why did I bother spending hours  raiding and building the base? Does the game reward any choice you make? Are you even making choices?

There is a mod that lets you control the time based shenanigans, if it interests you in anyway.

[Rant] Now if they only port that mod to the 360 I might play again, because seriously I waste two hours getting all these supplies and poof they are gone the next day, there's six new infestations the enclave next doors is wiped out, and nothing gets done because the player is the only person able to do something other the cause problems.[/Rant]

Really? I didn't think of the mods because the developers are so insistent on the feature being structural. Do you happen to remember the name of the particular mod? Is it "Zombie Standard time"?

Really, freemode is a paid DLC now? Glad I held off on buying this. Know what, for all the crap Zomboid has gone through with their multiple setbacks and glacial dev cycle, at least they haven't attempted to charge me a second time for content that was promised.

That said, If you're willing to overlook bugs, Zomboid is doing pretty well right now, and is only $15 on Steam, so look out for it on the Autum/Christmas sales coming up. Probably be able to get it for $5-10 then. They have a demo on Steam now too, which is the freemode, with the stipulation that you start bitten, so it's a timed demo.

Also, if you're ok with Map spoilers, people have compiled a picture of the entire game's map, with points of interest highlighted.

A shame though, I was hoping at the least we could get some actual competition going in the singleplayer zombie survival genre.

I don't think I realized how annoying the time progression mechanic would be until now. I didn't know you could only save after a mission, so if your situation made it difficult to achieve yesterday I have good news for you today~. Coupled with the DLC thing this really isn't the game I thought I bought. I'll have to look into the mods tomorrow.

EDIT: Almost forgot the janky controls.

I reckon it is Zombie Standard Time/Direct Link.  I suppose it is not exactly the most wholesome looking one now that I look at it.  Meh, I'll know after I get into breakdown.

Thanks: that is the one I found, and also felt was a little questionable (Is it weird to only trust mods that come in a particular format: some indication of what it is in it, a readme, user reviews etc, from a mod website I know to be dependable)

I think it is just the normal functions. I don't mind food and painkillers being depleted. It is more that I left 8 healthy, well armed survivors and came back to 2 healthy 3 wounded and 3 dead survivors, no ammo and no food. It seems like the "decay" is intended, but there was supposed to be some reaction to your accomplishments: so if you got no food, logging back in would see bad moods and starvation and if you raided and cleared hordes you'd come back to a happy well-stocked camp. However, the game seems to operate with its own bad AI motives and the AI manages to screw over anything you actually put together.

But yeah. without the mod it is a matter of alt-tabbing instead of quitting and frankly it has not held my interest enough. At best it is grand theft auto with zombies, at worst it is a simulation of a zombie sandbox: not a real sandbox, but a fairly decent imitation of one (hit x to search building, hit f to search it quickly etc)

Well, just got the Sandbox DLC recently...

It has optimization problems or something and I just crashed.  I think some things are broken, like no outposts and what-not.  Yes, no story things.
I've set-up at the Alamo as my first base, it constantly gets hit, but I can just ignore it since I've picked up more then enough random people to hold down the fort.  Ton of infestations to clear though.  One block had 5 of them, at the same time.  A 6th was near by too.
Other mods do not work in Breakdown either, so keep that in mind.

Recommendation: Wait it out, it might get better.

I really want to like this game... But I don't. It's so close, yet so far. Most of my peeves have been mentioned already in this thread.

Wierd, I've been loving breakdown, each level gets harder so it finally feels like an actual game, and makes you do things based on necessity (like how close your RV is to somewhere you can defend).  Story mode was super boring.
