Just came across the most badass goblin in Legends mode.
« on: September 20, 2013, 01:41:24 pm »

I always hated goblins – the thieving, baby-snatching scum have never contributed anything to Dwarvern society – so I was quite pleased when the world I generated had a sprawling human civilization: The Empire of Fins. This empire began in the northeastern corner of the map and rapidly outgrew the area since there were no rival civilizations. It soon encroached upon the territory of the Elven and Goblin civilization located at the center of the map and quickly overwhelmed the former, assimilating the elves into their Empire.

Then in the year of 94, the Empire of Fins waged war upon The Ghoul of Flares and absolutely decimated them for 17 years, destroying two towns, conquering twelve others, and enslaving numerous goblins as well as their demon leader. Every single battle was won by the humans, with the defenders being entirely wiped out each time. However, in the of 111, the Empire of Fins suddenly encountered their first defeat... By a single goblin. Enter Utes Reignedmenace, the Dreadful Romance of Smokes:

Spoiler: Impotent rage (click to show/hide)

I looked at the screen in disbelief; 583 kills?! Surely this goblin is a vampire or a werebeast of some sort of have that sort of strength! But I was wrong: this goblin is driven by rage and vengeance. She is an escaped slave of the Empire of Fins, having been captured in one of the wars in 96 and escaping in 109. She ran deep into goblin territory, settling in Werechained to escape the war, and while the other goblins fled in the face of the inevitable war that threatened all of goblin-kind, Utes simply flipped the fuck out and single-handedly forced the humans to end the war. The Empire of Fins never attacked again. It is also interesting to note that the Dwarven civ was also at war with The Ghoul of Flares at the same time, but they didn't attack any towns after Utes' victory. They accepted the a peace treaty in 115 and promptly went to gang up on the other goblin civ with the Empire of Fins.

But peace was not to last: Werechained is located on the edge of goblin territory, being the only goblin town left standing from the previous war. Just so you have a perspective of how hopeless the situation looks like, this is the layout of the human invasion in the previous war, with the blue obviously being the human civ and the one green circled in red being Werechained

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Werechained has no reinforcements. It was just Utes. The humans, knowing this, sent in the Elves to overtake it in 127. Utes Reignmenace flipped her shit once again:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

She had a handful of allies this time (probably the ones who fled before) and they will continue surviving with her and become legends of their own. I like to think that Utes trained them into becoming furious berserkers who flip out at the slightly provocation (which would explain why the population of Werechained is always so small). Having survived two battles heavily stacked against her and destroying her enemies, Utes retired peacefully... Until the second human civilization, The Dented Confederacy, seeing that they outnumber the goblins 121:1 decided to attack in 142. Everyone flipped their shit. With style.

Spoiler: Get Dent (click to show/hide)

The humans recovered their numbers and attacked again ten years later; Utes' forces numbered less than before, but still managed to perform better than last time:

Spoiler: Final Flip (click to show/hide)

That was the last war Utes participated in since my world gen stopped at 157. She is still alive and still resides in Werechained. What amazes me most is that Utes was never rewarded for any of her accomplishments; she isn't the ruler of The Ghoul of Flares (that guy resides in a town conquered by the humans), a general, or anyone of importance: she is just an escaped slaved that wants to live in peace, always retaliating in self defense. As of now, she has a total of 773 kills.

Spoiler: Affiliations (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: unnamed victims (click to show/hide)

The other goblin civ isn't doing as well. I wonder what they're doing wrong...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anyone else have stories of amazing individuals who aren't rulers or anyone of importance?

Track her history, examine the relatives and what they did, where they came from.  Utes sounds a little bit like Tholtig Lite.  I wonder how far the similarities go.

Also, yay goblins!

I've had several things like this. The best one I remember were two elves who defended their city side-by-side, gathering I think about 2,000 kills between them. They later died in battle somewhere else; I'll try to dig them up.

I also had a dwarf who spent his life killing megabeasts. He slew two dragons, among a host of others.

EDIT: found them
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They broke in the Siege of Shocking, which ended fifteen years of war with the Dwarves.
They both died three years later, defending against the humans.

Alright, I tracked down her family history a bit.

The majority of Utes' family lived in the goblin town of Lucidjackals until the Empire of Fins conquered it in 96. At that point, her entire family dispersed into many directions, with most of them becoming small pockets of resistance:

- Her parents are alive and well. They have no real history other than being "one of the first of [their] kind" and becoming part of the same bandit group after fleeing Lucidjackals.
Spoiler: Parents (click to show/hide)

- Utes' older brother, Dang Scourgeseared, led a more interesting life than their parents. His wife was murdered by another goblin who was, in turn, shot in the head by an invading human. Of the 21 kids he has, only two of his daughers survived, with six dying in the war and the rest dying of other causes. His two daughters ran off together and join the same bandit group. When the Empire of Fins came for Lucidjackals in 96, Dang was already the leader of a criminal organization in the town. Apparently he was bribed or something to betray his fellow goblins since he is a participant in the battle against his sister in 111 and is listed as a full member of the Empire of Fins and a former member of the Ghoul of Flares.
Spoiler: Traitorous scum (click to show/hide)

The most important piece of information I found is where Utes' allies are coming from. Almost all of them are former slaves of the Empire of Fins who eventually found their way to Werechained (not like they had any other towns to go to). Quite a few of them are related to Utes, actually. I like to think that her brother attempted to sell his entire family as slaves.

Here are a few of the more interesting former slaves and allies of Utes. A lot of them are just Utes' family members. It also turns out I was right about their berserker rage keeping their population in check, though I haven't seen anything about family members murdering other family members.

- Smunstu Scorpianesteemed, Utes' husband. (escaped 119 and reunited with his wife to fight the elves in 127; murdered by Osnun Confusedsin in 136)
- Osnun Confusedsin, distant cousin of Smustu Spiderlashed (escaped 126; fought in two wars and murdered in 146 by Scorpianesteemed's brother, Ber Desertsteal).
- Smunstu Spiderlashed, distant cousin of Osnun. Her grandparents, parents, siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles were all killed in the war with a few exception who died in other horrible ways (escaped 138, killed in war of 142).
- Ber Desertsteal, elder brother of Scorpianesteemed, younger brother of Osnun, brother-in-law of Utes (escaped 135; still alive)
- Osnun Jackalspread, brother of Smunstu and brother-in-law of Utes (escaped 139, fought in the two wars with the Dented Confederacy; survived).
- Dang Terrorchanneled, Utes' youngest son born in 123. Murdered in 149 by Keth Creaturefigured.
- Keth Creaturefigured, a human child that Utes abducted in 112. He defended against the rest of the invasions and was killed in the last one.

None of them were notable in any war prior to the war. Utes somehow turned this ragtag group of misfits and family members into a killer force, with Werechained acting as a beacon of hope for escaped slaves.

I've had several things like this. The best one I remember were two elves who defended their city side-by-side, gathering I think about 2,000 kills between them. They later died in battle somewhere else; I'll try to dig them up.

Whoa, cool. Were these elves related in any way? Are they the leaders of their civ?

Don't think they were related; Nefola was the queen, but Iferi was just a soldier.

Anyways, I think I found the best thing to ever happen in Legends. I've made a story for it here.

Wow. :D
Utes is a pretty big dang hero, that's for sure.
I cannot wait for the next version, when these interesting figures will go on living after worldgen, their stories continuing on as we play, their stories intertwining with those of our forts and adventurers.

According to the Legends Viewer, her occupation is as a master crossbowman. However, she is apparently also equally as good with a spear.
Spoiler: Utes' skills (click to show/hide)

I'm surprised the last three skills are so low considering her success. Though I justified it in my head as simply not being able to control the goblins' inherent penchant for stabbing each other in the back.

I do not use any mods. Except for a few reactions to make spears since I get my giggles throwing them.

While we're here I noticed that in a different world I made, gigantic pandas are OP:

Spoiler: Case 1 (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Case 2 (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Case 3 (click to show/hide)

I'm going to pretend it is the exact same gigantic panda each time, taking down three generations of demonic lizard rulers.

Actually now that I think of it, I've never seen sentient that isn't also a demon defeat one in direct combat. Outside of war, they're highly susceptible to murders and executions by other sentients, though.

I notice all three times, they struck down an elf before getting killed by the gigantic panda. Are they from the same civ? Also two of them were leaders of the same goblin civ, one after the other.

Yeah, I noticed that after I posted and went to do a bit more digging complete with updated screen shots. Turns out they're all from the same civ and were each other's successors. And they were all at war with the same elven civilization. An elf became the master of the goblin civ for a year after the last guy died before getting chased out by a tortoise demon, by the way. He didn't get killed by the gigantic panda... Yet.

So Utes is like Spartacus, leading the rebellion of former slaves against all odds?

Yeah, Legends Mode is awesome thing.

I think it's pretty shame how weak goblin civilizations are usually during world-gen. They have just too much enemies; they get their asses kicked without soldiers like Utes. Most of the worlds I gen goblin civs are conquered by humans after 300 years or so. It's really hard to hate somebody who's underdog. If those goblins are against the whole world, I can't help but feel pity for them.

How about embarking a fort near that dark fortress and get a siege led by Utes?

Knowing DF he'd get either shredded by glass serrated disks or mobbed by 45 dwarven wrestlers
