Trading in Adventure

Having not yet acquired a weapon in Adventure mode, I've tried trading most of my starting goods for one on a few occasions. I mark the weapon, and all my goods and then hit 't' to trade. All my possessions then disappear from my inventory, but I do not gain the weapon. Am I doing something wrong?

The object is on display in the shop.   When it is purchased, it becomes free to grab.   The $ around its name are gone, if you notice.
