How do you brush your hair well?
« on: September 18, 2013, 11:54:14 am »

Stupid topic for a stupid situation.

I am harassed everyday (Dear goodness this person harasses me for every little thing... such as zipping up a coat) for how my hair doesn't look brushed in spite of brushing it... Yet I am entirely unwilling to use ANY chemicals in my hair.

How do you brush hair to make it look good? The barber always makes it look easy.

Get it wet, brush repeatedly. Everyone's hair behaves differently. If you're not going to use spray or gel to make pesky hairs stay down....you have to deal with the hair the universe gave you.

Also, if you've never been good about brushing, you need to "train" your hair by repeatedly brushing it the same way.

Everyone's hair is different, but I've found mine is a bit neater if I wait for it to dry before combing it. Your hair might be the opposite.

I use a ********* (don't want to make advertising, but if you want to know pm me), the best brush, made with *Boar Bristle*. :p
It's quite expensive, but it worth it.They also make brushes for men. You just give a few strokes and it makes your hair neat, nice and it doesn't hurt your scalp.

The short answer, as ninjin said, is to use moisture. Try toweling your hair "dry" after a shower and brushing it immediately afterwards. You'll find that the towel won't remove all moisture and this is a good time to brush. Then let it dry as you've brushed it before going out. If you want advanced mode, get a blow dryer or straightening iron.

Length can be a factor as well. For certain weights of hair, there are some lengths that are long enough to need brushing, but not long enough that the weight of the hair is enough to keep it in place. In cases like that, growing it out longer can help. But if you have naturally very curly hair, that might not help, and cutting it shorter might. Or, if your hair is suitably long, you can use a hairtie to put it in a ponytail and tuck that into the back of your shirt and let it dry there. once it does, you can remove it from your shirt and it will be relatively straight and flat.

Picture of your hair might help.

Be aware of external factors. Are you brushing your hair, but then driving around with your windows down so that your hair is a mess by the time you arrive anywhere? Do you drive a motorcycle and have helmet-hair?

Also...to be perfectly blunt, from the OP, it's difficult to determine if:

a) Your hair is perfectly ok, and the person harassing you just likes to complain and won't be happy regardless of what you do
b) You happen to be genetically inclined towards unmanageable hair. This is actually a real problem some people have and if you check the hair care aisle of your local grocery store you'll find products that cater to people with these problems.
c) You somehow never learned to brush your hair and somehow never noticed until now.

Mess up your hair as badly as you can and tell them to %^&* off when they bother you, I'm sure you look awesome.
Unless it's your boss/teacher/someone else in a position of power. Then do what other people tell you to do.
Or wear a hat, if you're allowed.

I had a period when I deciced to have long hair. Also, I have rather strong hair (roughly 106 microns, while average male has ~96 microns). And there was a time, where no amount of brushing would make my hair obey the laws of physics. I tried everything - brushing wet, using hair gel... but nothing really helped. It got better, when I was able to tie my hair into ponytail. Now, I'm back to short hair and no problems.

BAHAHAHAHAHA.

Brushing your hair is for the weak! Now a beard on the other hand, needs a lot of care, including brushing, so if you want to know about that...

For a long time I was washing my hair too regularly which made it frizzy, dry, and unmanageable. It really depends on what sort of hair you have and what you spend your time doing (sweaty job for example). If you can't handle going a day without washing it try using an "everyday" shampoo instead as they are less harsh.

Try using separate shampoo plus conditioner. It makes a huge difference.

Also, again, worst case, use a straightener. They're like $40. Or go to a salon and have a permanent straightening done that will last for months.

If you want long hair, you need to learn how to have long hair. Don't expect to be able to just brush your hair for 10 seconds with a cheap plastic comb and be done with it.

This is what I have always done. It is the only way known to me. I wouldn't say I have long hair yet though, that's still a work in progress. But if what your omen foretells is the truth, then my path will prove difficult to adjust to.  :P

Heh, I remember when I decided to have long hair (I have it short now, never going back to long hair) and I had the problem that my hair is too...
I don't know, it would tangle and form knots, and I couldn't really cut them out because, for whatever reason, my hair is too freaking strong. (Literally, my dad tried to use an electric razor on it, and my hair broke the razor somehow. It destroyed 3 of the things until he used scissors.)
I don't know how many microns that is, but I have had many people make remarks on how unnaturally resilient my hair is.
I've even had a hair person (not actually a barber, don't know the proper word) say that they've been cutting hair for 14 years, and have never seen hair as thick as mine.

My long hair was a case of 'comb for fifteen minutes, in the shower, with conditioner in to lubricate, every day', but it was obscenely curly and thus not necessarily representative.
