The counterattack

Day 1: The bombardment

The fires on Crow's Isle are still burning, as it's only a few weeks after the first attack. In the late night, our entire attack squad of eleven Albatross aircraft set course for the Moldavian coast. Targets were the three closest airfields, in order to facilitate the air superiority operation that would soon follow. Benefiting from their high service altitude, the Albatross were able to bomb the airfields with impunity, though strong winds scattered the bombs, reducing the damage done. The runways were damaged, and a few aircrafts standing nearby destroyed, but the total effect remains rather limited.

Our air superiority attack is met with fairly heavy resistance. While our forces outnumber the enemy almost 2 to 1 (4 to 1 if you don't count their outdated fighters), their fighters are still quite formidable, and are now receiving artillery support from Crow's Island. Still, the enemy suffers tremendous losses, and is rapidly pushed back. Our overwhelming firepower allows us to gain an almost 2 to 1 killratio, and by the end of the day the enemy has effectively left Crow's Island airspace, though their anti air umbrella is still holding strong.

Day 2: The Attack

Sporadic skirmishing erupts in the air as the enemy makes it first attempts to probe our defenses. Our bombers continue their interdiction plan, with limited success. Despite air superiority efforts, an enemy naval scout plane manages to detect our fleet movements. Enemy troops are presumable put at alert.

Enemy submarines attack the convoy from behind, hiding behind our own propellers to conceal their sonar signature. The Glory class cruiser is sunk, as well as 2 protectors. A few ships suffer minor damage. Enemy torpedo range estimated at 2 kilometers, and 2 Torpedo tubes per submarine.

At the same time, our Herring submarines executed a raid against the enemy ships. The happened upon a commerce raider that was already damaged, sinking it, as well as sinking the 8000 ton aircraft carrier. No submarines were lost.

At the same time, the battle in the air intensifies. Losses on both sides increase rapidly, but the situation isn't changed and we maintain air superiority, and the enemy is forced to retreat. The Osprey's attempt a few bombing runs, but enemy AA fire, as well as local topography and weather conditions makes it hard for them to do their jobs.

Our fleet's attack begins not long thereafter. The enemies long range bombardment is surprisingly accurate, and the massive rounds are strong enough to pierce through even the Protector's armored citadel. A few lucky hits destroy a couple of ships, including a few hunters and a Protector or two. Another Protector sustains a drive failure.

As our fleet's close, the artillery battle intensifies. Apparently the enemy has managed to salvage a single Artillery installation, as fire comes from the coast as well as their ships. Shells crash amidst the fleet , though neither side takes huge casualties. Torpedo boats race for the enemy ships, but come under heavy fire from both ships as well as limited coast artillery. A few aircraft attempt to take shots at the respective sides, but neither side is successful.

The already damaged cruiser are starting to take heavy beatings under the attack of the fleet however, and 2 cruisers are destroyed. The third retreats back into the port's sheltered harbor, a position from which it's unlikely to escape, it's 2 sister ships are blocking way out.

You're suddenly Minister of War, for a moment. How will you proceed?

Right, first off we need that aircraft carrier and the airfields. So lets do what we did last time for that. Meanwhile we need cods landing gear on the island for our troops. When the airfields and the carrier is down we attack with our full navy, excepting subs. Cods will just be ferrying gear to the island and the herrings will sit behind the forces to snipe off the stragglers.

Oh, and lets pull some crazy ivans on them, shall we?

Also they've practically beached their naval power, so why not just albatross them into smithereens.

Yep, Albatrosses should carpetbomb the port... bombing own port is unpleasant, but that will supress coastal battery\AA guns and sink that cruiser\other ships in the port.

Also not for now, but for future... Enemy cruisers are sunk in shallow waters, they may become our own cruisers should we reconquer crow's, raise them and repair

On a side note, like quite a few islands, most of the infrastructure and housing is situated around the port. Just saying.

They don't. The force lists were those present at the start of the attack.

0) Hunters look for submarines and torpedo boats. Ca. half of the Ospreys do naval patrols with rockets. Keep air superiority.
1) Attack the enemy cruiser using Albatross', Ospreys and artillery bombardment
2) Suppress enemy coastal batterie(s) and their AA emplacements with the protectors, air strikes on them.
3) Landed troops free forts and link up with those troops
3) Artillery and air support, attacking with the troops.

4) Piranhas, Revolutionaries and single, most intact protector, try to pursue  smaller enemy crafts trying to retreat from the area, picking up damaged crafts and finishing them with torpedoes. Great risk is allowed, killing enemy navy here can be a huge victory

5) Single herring to try to sneak into the harbor and send several torpedoes into cruiser. That may allow us to avoid bombings and give us more intact cruiser to raise

The counterattack

((So that didn't work out as planned. Ah well, can't be helped. Back to normal updates from now on.))

Day 2: The Landing

In the air the battle again swings out to our favor, as the enemy is now completely outnumbered. Despite their valiant efforts to hold our forces back, and the resistance they offered, the enemy is completely annihilated, with only minimal losses on our side. With the air now under our control, our bombers could safely start the attack on the enemy ground forces. High command decided against a bombing run at the harbor, as civilian casualties would be tremendous. Instead the Albatrosses are relegated to suppressing the enemy coastal and anti-air artillery. Unfortunately, high altitude bombing is not very effective at eliminating the rather mobile and small ant air installations, and the coastal artillery battery is still to heavily armored, despite the recent battles.

The Hunters are send out to eliminate the submarine threat. They manage to intercept and destroy several submarines, as well as some torpedo boats. Unfortunately, the others managed to slip by their sweep, and open up another barrage against our Protector's. The torpedo barrage sinks 2, and damages another. Meanwhile, the Osprey's, piranah's and a single protector do manage to take down several other ships, and a successful dive bombing attack cripples and sinks the cruiser (The fact that 2 cruisers were sunk near the harbor, and all the mines surrounding it, made it impossible for our submarines to approach).

On the other side of the island our troops are making a daring approach. The fortress on the tip of the island is still held by loyal troops, and stands near the edge of several cliffs. An ancient staircase leads to the water, allowing the soldiers to land quietly , and offload the supplies the Cod's have brought. The enemy forces here are almost absent, expecting a landing on the other side of the island, where the coasts are more accessible.

Battle soon erupts, with heavy losses on both sides. The enemy tanks prove to be very effective, as air support is the only efficient way to destroy them. The Moldavian tankettes don't appear to have gone through any serious design changes however, and are easily annihilated. Despite their material superiority, our troops rapidly advance, and have recaptured 75% of the island by sunset. The enemy still remains in control of the Island's primary harbor however.

Battle plan A

Short term stuff: Stop the advance, Do not assault , instead establish blockade with Herrings\Piranhas\Revolutionaries\one hunter and take a pause, saving remains of our Ospreys for the more important job, saving our soldiers.


More long term stuff:

Our Albatrosses must attack their drydocks capabilities to let us win navy rebuilding race. Also, do several escorted Osprey dive bombing on the said dry docks. Preferably once our new Sparrows start to get produced
Stop\reduce raids as soon as enemy will start inflict serious loses on us

Start harassing enemy commerce with three groups of Protector\Punisher + 3 hunters for anti-sub escort, In the same time half of herrings to raid enemy shipping, too

Half of Revolutionaries half of Piranhas, another half of herrings, Punisher or two and several hunters + some of Ospreys will maintain the naval blockade. Should large enemy navy be spotted, recall commerce raiding groups to Crow's island

Rest of the fleet to protect our commerce raiding, it's unlikely that enemy will stop raiding our convoys

Supply our forces on Crow's island using Cods\Grigorovichs... (why the hell we didn't produce that great supply aircrafts earlier?)\V3 airships. Bring artillery to them, they need it against tanks

And have Albatros or two drop propaganda materials to enemy forces on the island, offering them safety should they surrender, and blaming their oppressive government that sent them on war for nothing

Team Alpha:  Annihilator Cruiser 

The design of the Annihilator class cruiser is almost completed by the end of the year, but it has some minor flaws. The dual transmission system is fairly complicated, and has considerably lengthened the expected construction time. Additionally, it's 5 Propeller system(3 Steam, 2 Diesel)  is expected to be quite noisy, making it very easy to be picked up by Hydrophones.

Team Beta: Helicopter

The expertise of our aviation engineers was critical in the successful creation of this project, nevertheless, the technology is still very experimental, and the result might be slightly underwhelming. Our helicopter uses 2 Old 200 kw Aviation engines to propel 2 coaxial Twin propellers. Tilt can be used to make the craft move in a variety of directions, and a small load can be attached under it. It's very light, quite nimble, and rather fragile. ((Note: Is probably record breaking, but anyway))

Team Theta

A kit is produced that allows diesel engines to run on a variety of oils, and Petrol engines on a variety of alcohols. It doesn't work on every engine, and it reduces lifetime and performance somewhat, but it works.

Alternative fuel kit:
   -Reduce performance with up to 10%
   -Reduced lifetime



Naval production is reorganized. (Again). Our engineers work as hard as they can to upgrade Sparrow's to IIb status. Meanwhile, production of Sparrow III's is slowly started. Our engineers also finish the construction of 4 V-3 airships (Not, cargo balloons) and 10 Grigorovich floatplanes.

Additionally, an experimental Coal liquefaction program is started. It's production is limited for now, but it does produce high quality oil. Refortication of Crow's Isle is not on the order, as the battle still rages on around the island. Additionally, the academy has been upgraded.

We received some simple Mine designs from our Russian comerades.

Situation on the front in Crow's Isle is quiet. The enemy has made no attempts to break through or reattack our lines. Supply runs using Grigoviches, Cods and V3 Airships were successful. The V3's proved a tempting target for the enemies anti air artillery, but they have stopped their attempts after it became clear that the craft was mostly immune to their weaponry. Nevertheless, the enemy has also tried, and partially succeeded in resupplying his troops by air, using both gliders and a small cargo aircraft. Often this happens at night, in order to prevent our aircraft from intercepting his ships.

Attempts to bombard the enemy naval production using our Osprey bombers has been unsuccessful. According to our intelligence services, most production happens on their capital island. Flying over the enemy terrain at day would decimate our craft, and they simply don't have the range to fly around. Albatrosses do attempt some scarce bombing of the enemy factories, but so far, no noticeable effect has been detected on the enemy war production. Our intelligence does claim that we hit a rifle factory, and some ammunition plants.

In the air, some conflict occurs, but not much. Naval raiding is similairy quiet, with the enemy preferring to attack our convoy's at much longer range. Strangely enough, the Northern supply line has also come under submarine attack.
