Flies? I don't recall any being present so far. Also, I'm not sure, but I think all the rice was immediately turned into a basket (somehow).

The Maelstrom viewed the battle with disinterest. It did not care for the affairs of the landdwellers.

It merely wanted to find who had abused the ocean's gifts.

Both sides, seeing that they were evenly matched, and both experiencing strong hunger and a desire for the pearl, yet too afraid to venture into the ocean again to look for more, gathered on the plains in the middle of the World Basket. And just as armies were about to join battle, a small chunk of one of the planets that had come out of the Great Fluffy One's ear came crashing down into the midst of the bamboo cluster at the center of the Basket, which was in the very middle of the two armies. The meteorite cracked in twain upon impact, revealing a magnificent magic sword that had been inside it.

Ah, now I understand what you are talking about. Those were fleas, not flies.

And so the Maelstrom took it's opportunity. It tried to wrench the blade from the comet, taking it as tribute to Melphari.

But the blade was stuck in the fast-growing bamboo, which all knew would only retreat for one who was clever of wit.

And so the Maelstrom raged. Eventually, it did something....strange.

It wrenched the bamboo itself from the ground, using the sword handle as a handle. It used it as a club.

And the bamboo sought to grow in something, and it's roots plunged into the Maelstrom, and through it, into the ground. And thus the ocean was held fast, for the bamboo would not budge.

Eventually. after a minute of struggling, the Maelstrom just phased through it and reappeared, uncaring. The ocean filled it, but it was not the ocean. Merely a force split off from the infinite azure depths.

It looked around at the assembled hosts of demons and rodents, studying them.

The leaders of the two armies both approached the Maelstrom to request its aid. Xarokan spoke first.

"Avatar of the sea, I can see that my actions have angered the ocean. But, if you help us now, I promise that I and my followers will never again take from the ocean more than needed to fill us, and I will return the great pearl to the depths from whence it came."

Then Selekel the False-Fur spoke up.

"Is that your tribute? Offering back something you stole and a promise not to take as much next time? Maelstrom, ny demons only crave the flesh of his rodents, and I and the Horrible Beings desire the pearl more than anything else. If you join my side, you can take back the food Xarokan stole, and I and my allies will never take from you any more, and you will have opportunity to punish this thief in whatever way you like."

"Enough."

The Maelstrom studied both leaders with its impassive visage.

"Cannibals of thine own kin upon my left, and thieves of the sea on the other. I hold the balance upon myself, and yet I am uncertain of who to believe."

Below the basket, the waters churned, but remained relatively calm. The fate of the World Basket lay upon the Maelstrom.

He looked at Xarokan. He looked trustworthy, but desperate. His people were assembled behind him, and they seemed....hopeless.

To his left was Selekel. The False One.

The False One. Heretic. Liar. Cannibal.

At that, the Maelstrom decided.

"The sea knows better than to trust one who is called False. You shall be punished, for presuming to swindle the Ocean.

Great Fluffy One, you shall answer for your plunder of the depths, I guarantee you that. I care not for the pearl, you can keep it.

But for now, we are allies, and may the depth of the seas CRUSH you, KIN-EATER!"
And the Maelstrom unleashed a torrent of rapid water upon the Horrible Beings, unleashing the fury of the Ocean.

The Fluffy Ones watched in awe as the Ocean's fury was released. Never had such a thing been seen yet in all the ages of the world.

Entirely logical outcome. The Ocean was defined as "punishing those who take more than they need". Xarokan and his fluffy buddies promised to not take more than they needed, while Selekel showed greed. Choice was obvious.

And with that a long era of peace and prosperity came upon the World Basket. Xarokan and the Fluffy Rodents prospered, respectfully feeding upon the sea's gifts -for when Maelstrom returned to Melphari the Infinite Ocean, a fraction of him stayed trapped within the bamboo's roots- and the countless animals living in the bamboo forest.

And as they lived, the bamboo watched. And learned. Eventually he decided to join them. So he took the mighty sword which fell from the heavens, and grew around it. Shaping itself to match the Rodents' form the best he could. But the sword contraried his growth, and he couldnt emulate the Rodents' fluffyness, so his skin stayed as smooth as the young bamboo, but took the color of the mud.

His mind was flexible like the bamboo, able to be fluffy like the Rodents, yet capable of just wrath like Maelstrom.

So was born the first man.
