I have a ton of this ore, but I can't figure out what metal it makes. The wiki says brass, but the game says brass needs malachite.

Sphalerite is zinc.  sph + malac (copper) -> brass bars

Brass needs both ores to make. I can't remember what it makes by itself though. There was a post about it here somewhere, try the search.
