The standard dsi/3ds/xl charger is 4.6V, 800mA. I unwittingly bought a non-officia lone that is 5.2V, 580mA.

I believe a 3ds xl has a LiPo battery. If you use to high a voltage this happens. Thus I am somewhat nervous about using this charger now.

So, is it safe? I don't think the 3ds has a voltage regulator, so i'm really not too sure what to do. My 3ds xl only arrived today, I don't want to destroy it.

I wouldn't advise it. I'm pretty sure that the 3ds 'charger' is just a power supply, the actual peak charging electronics are built into the device. So you might not blow up the battery, but you might fry your 3ds. No idea what the 3ds' max voltage is.

Better safe than sorry. I'd recommend getting a proper one.

Don't be silly. Go for the 12v 1A AC adaptor. Not some piddly little 3.6v 300mA DC weenie!
