I would point out to GWG that prostitution wasn't typically illegal in any sort of manner for a long time, except possibly in very highly religious nations. It's called 'the oldest profession' for a reason. Though he's certainly right in that out old family was crappy. We're better off not associating with that piece of the past.

Pearl diving might give us some good cash for a while, but since hardly nobody can breath that long underwater we will have to do all the work ourselves, which shouldn't be our goal. We could finance a start-up with this kinda work. Wasn't there an herbologist around?

Well, "criminal" is a lot easier to type over and over than "associated with prostitution". And while it is the oldest profession*, it is also one of the least prestigious; criminals and brothel-owners probably have pretty similar levels of respect among the community, and the "probably" is mostly hedging my bets in case we have forgotten that, in this culture, prostitutes are a vital part of some religious ceremony or something.
...Which is probably a concept we shouldn't think about too much.

Pearl diving might give us some good cash for a while, but since hardly nobody can breath that long underwater we will have to do all the work ourselves, which shouldn't be our goal.
Whatever we do, we should focus on our gifts. Our major gift right now is the ability to function well underwater, which can be used quite lucratively by pearl-diving. (It could also serve as a bonding activity between mother and son.)
Once we have some other skills or possessions or something, we can exploit those.

*Prostitution is such an old profession, even some species of monkeys practice it! They exchange intercourse for grooming. It even functions on a system of supply-and-demand; more females means they get groomed less for their services.
This has been your Mildly Creepy Fact of the Day.

Probably something that takes advantage of our natural abilities. Maybe we could try pearl-diving again?

...What?

My reaction was similar. I have never heard of anything connecting diving for pearls and prostitution.

Also, this isn't 4chan, though that post seems like it could very well be from there.

You should learn more euphemisms.

Well, even taken as a euphemism, it still doesn't have anything to do with prostitution itself.

So no dice, there.

Heh. Probably the one thing you would specifically avoid doing on a prostitute, actually... apart from kissing on the lips, that is. Prostitutes are not girlfriends. They'll just look at their watches, while your tongue is busy becoming a diverse zoo of various species of social disease.

Thank you for that diverse array of disturbing images.
