Random names?
« on: September 13, 2013, 03:02:27 am »

Do you prefer your fortress/group of dwarves/military squads named randomly, or do you tamper with them?

I am asking to get better idea what are the players here, like. :)

I always use the computergenerated names. For me those names are the names of the Dwarven civilisation, yes, even though they're randomly generated and mostly ridiculous, but making my own name just wouldn't be right.

Unless I think of something neat or inspiring on my own, I use the RNG to reroll until I get something that is.

Most of the time when i start a new fort i want something epic, something strong, like: Hammerfate or Axecastle! But then i remind myself why my last fort got destroyed... Necromancers and tantruming Urist McHammerlordOfEverything. I mean the game is epic but it can be also ridiculously funny how some dwarfs decide it would be a good idea to drink and go to the Booze stockpile, while on fire. And then i decide that i go with...Moistedwings...or something like that...

This thread is why I love dwarf fortress. We start at engravings of wagons and end up using necromancy to raise them from the dead, and were-wagons.
I jumped off a ramp in a cave and exploded.

I keep the dwarves standard names right up until the point I care about something. Then they get nicknames, descriptive names, or just personal names. I always give them job titles though that are different from normal, so I know if I've assigned them a job yet. The colors and standard job titles are useless to me, and really just get in my way. Just 'cus our highest skill is beekeeping doesn't mean that I'll ever have a beekeeper. And sorry migrant cook, I already got like 30 dwarves that can cook just fine. You're going to be a weaponsmith this time.

Also, I always change the military squad names. I don't want a squad of sword users to be called the spears of eviserating or something. Sometimes I give them simple descriptive names "sword 1, sword 2", and sometimes I give them general themed names "migrants of scum, migrants of slugs, migrants of slime", or alternatively "Pointy stabbers" "Dragon militia"  "spears of eviserating", etc.

No! No! I will not massacre my children. Instead, I'll make them corpulent on crappy mass-produced quarry bush biscuits and questionably grown mushroom alcohol, and then send them into the military when they turn 12...

I keep all names except adventurer names, where I reroll them several times until I find on I like. I actually prefer to have odd names, like the hammerdwarf squad named for swords; it's mildly amusing.

I prety much only modify squad names if I'm haveing a hard time keeping track of their role.  The actual military tends to end up with the uninspiring marks1 marks2 hammer1 and so on names while the civies in full metal clothing replaceing uniforms get to keep whatever random name they generated as.  all the other names stay as they are generated although key dwarves may end up with nicknames based on their proffession so I dont accidently reassign them to hauling or megaproject construction later on.

It varies. If the name is appropriate, I'll keep it, otherwise I'll give them a generic name.

I recently caught a vampire and put him in a squad so I could station him in an isolation chamber, and the random squad name was "The Black Dead"....He's still in the squad, busily training away in solitary.

I take the generated names. The only exception is that I'll reroll bad fortress names. In particular, I hate the double past participles, like "Boltedcrafted." For the record, either Boltcrafted or Boltedcraft would be fine with me.

I use the generated names just as they come quite nearly all the time. In the cases where I get a just plain terrible name, I'll re-roll with the generator; disband/recreate squad or "random name" for adventurers. I never touch the fort or expedition names.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

I usually use the random generator to get inspiration for a name that I then tweak to my liking.

I don't just keep the random names generated by the game; I also tweaked entity_default.txt such that dwarves will draw from all of the available symbols for words to use in site and dwarf names, boosting the variety (and therefore randomness) of the names that can pop up. I've had a dwarf with the surname "Deathsnuggle," and I love the random number gods for giving him to me.

To answer, I used to make my own names, too, but would always abandon my fortress (or be abandoned from it) because of one mistake or another and got recently somewhat tired of it. Now I generate names until I find one I like and then try to make the fortress to it's theme. One feels less burned out when he loses his fort to an ambush in second year when he doesn't spend 20 minutes thinking up a name.

I suppose I'd still make up my own name for an important squad if the place grew large enough to support both professional and unprofessional army.

I keep the random generated name. However, I would sometimes like that the name could be more related to what made the dwarf famous. And I would also like that a Dwarf could have a name from other actions than just killing ennemies.
For example, a miner should have a name if he became legendary in the fortress. Something like "Urist the eater of gold" or "Urist the imperial socketed digger".
