Did some work on the planets. Humidity spreads in every direction and in the ridiculous diamond shape that usually happens when one is lazy. But apparently the terrain takes care of hiding that problem.

I have been working on making planets look less like pure noise, and to have more unique features. What you see in the above image are two islands. In noise terms, one has a lower and the other higher persistence. The general effect is that some areas of a planet are more granular, and others are smoother.

Above you can see a feature that this creates. Rows of small islands are now a common sight.

Another example. The one on the left has a lower persistence, and the right one has higher. If the situations were reversed, then you would most likely see a swampy area around the lake on the left, and the chain of islands on the right would be an unified piece of land.

And here is a another improvement. Planets now have higher and lower areas, instead of an uniform distribution of land.

Hmm.  Pretty cool.  Reminds me of my own planet-making days. :)

Something that you might want to take a look at: Your maps seem to be stretched vertically a bit.  It's probably a problem with the scaling of your noise function.

You are correct. The conversion to a cylinder shape(so the planets wrap around) has broken things a bit, so I have to multiply the y by something to get the correct value. After some calculating I found that the value should be about 15% bigger than what I used before(5 vs 4*sqrt(2) aka 5,7 ). Earlier I just put in whatever wasn't horribly stretched.

Also, I seemingly fudged my seed generation pretty heavily. I noticed that a shape similar to a 3 was showing up on a lot of planets. Some further investigation reveals that the seed was always 30. I somehow managed to give every planet the seed of the universe. I am horribly confused about why I didn't notice this sooner.

Okay, so it's stretched because you're projecting a cylinder onto a sphere.

I guess mine was also always stretched; I projected a square onto an octahedron onto a sphere, but my display function always showed me the sphere, so the stretching wasn't visible.

The thread name in conjunction with your YouTube link led me to Monthy Python's spam video. Which is a good thing. :) Also - great work! I like looking at the direction it is moving. ;)

The obligatory image spam.

Wow, I hadn't realized that my last post here was 3 months ago. Been a busy few months.

Back now though. I've been messing around with planets for a few weeks(read: spent a couple of hours) and cleaned up a bit of planet code(removed old debugging stuff and experiments) to get myself familiarized with my code again.

I left the thing as quite the mess. Especially the seed generation. The only problem is that by messing with it, I am scrapping the planets I had gotten used to. I guess it's necessary though. Good night, sweet prince. Your perfect size will be missed.

So, yeah. Got a lot of cleaning to do, as always.

You may be wondering what I did this week. Truly it must be something grand!

I made a button. But not any ordinary button no, but a general use button, that can do anything! By which I mean it can do the things a button should do, like be pressed, and to react to such a press, and to then tell other things to do stuff.

Behold:

In case you're wondering why it looks like a really small tileset. That's because it is one. I couldn't be arsed to draw a button at the moment, so I used a random image for the button.

Ahh, the wonders of writing your own engine.

So, yeah. Pretty much just back-end stuff this week. Nothing particularly interesting, if you aren't me and don't have to work with my code. Gonna make a preliminary region menu thingy tomorrow, which should be more interesting.
