Birch => Special bark for cloth and rope.

Birch is also host to the chaga mushroom. It is used to make tea and is said to have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidizing properties. Active ingredients are extracted with either hot water or alcohol and the liquid is run through a filtering material.

Reaction to "make chaga tea" involving some booze and said mushroom that produces a new kind of booze that gives a small boost to disease resistance. This incentivises logging operations as dwarves can be made more resistant to various nasty syndromes that are bound to end up in the well or the bathhouse.

Speaking of tanning etc, what about a leather clothing set option from the tailor's workshop. With tattered clothes and harder farming, I find it would be generally less hassle just to use thin leather with a one step leather outfit reaction. Beats the fort running around in tatters, drunk and in awe of their dining-room, waterfall, and bedrooms.

Possible, a leather clothing set would take me only 2-3mins.

It sounds good if it's optional. I could see myself creating a logging fort dedicated to doing all of this but in general practice I like having my wooden items called "Wooden" "Smooth Wooden" and "Fair" and I wouldn't do any of this in the normal course of business. I also wouldn't like the idea of making tanning any more complicated, I always just assumed dwarves were counting an appropriate amount of fat or brain tissue with the skin so they could take the lot to the tannery.

I like the sound of this.

Further thoughts: Bark paper and cloth, willow is particularly good for making charcoal out of, there are some hardwoods (such as brazilwood) that are excellent sources of dye.

i'm personally not too sure about the tanning part, i feel it would make me default to just  only getting leather from trade, since it would be a lot of managed stocks and skill to get fairly low protecting armor.

I am not sure about it either. I might even wait with all the wood-stuff for the next DF update, because trees change completely.
