I use a series of custom reactions to make furniture from blocks then use stockpile restrictions and workshop links to work out which shops use which blocks. Wooden planks get made into bins and barrels, bricks make furniture, fine bricks make noble furniture.

Why wouldn't you use fine bricks to make regular rooms? The boulders are essentially free, costing only the meager amount of time it takes to dig them. Or are you skittish about having too much value in a fort?

I tend to build 6-tile large rooms for each dwarf, all fully furnished with noble sets. Not like it's hard to produce. Plus, it's good Stonecrafting training!

I like a demarcation between the quality of items the nobles have and the quality of items the commoners have.

Rock for commoners, precious metal for Nobles then. Fine bricks are only 3 value now, not the 25 they were a few version ago, might as well put some omph and at least spring for steel stuff for the nobles. 8)
