FPS on Large vs. Small World Maps

It makes sense that I'm getting significantly better FPS on small world maps, right?  Not small site maps, obviously I understand that, but what all is it thinking about outside my site that slows it down?  Or maybe I'm just imagining things.  Also you gotta love a game that lets you chop off somebody's arm then pick it up and throw it at them so hard it knocks off their other arm.
