Dwarf Fortress Talk 20
« on: September 07, 2013, 09:03:26 pm »

At the 59 minute mark (ish) in the talk toady mentions an obscure word 'multiplanar', he said that he wanted to implement multiplanar worlds in dwarf fortress but it would be difficult like adding the z- axis was. What does he mean 'multiplanar world'? i tried to find a definition of the word and havent found anything. The prefix multi means many, and planar means having to do with two dimensions, but i cant see what feature the word multiplanar could describe. Does anyone know more about this than i do?

I assume he meant that he would make different discrete planes of reality that can be traveled too through some (hopefully late-game) means. Like going to another dimension. This is a REALLY imperfect analogy, but it would almost be like thinking of the world as we know it now as a vertical line. These other planes would be like changing the world's x-coordinate. Hopefully I haven't confused you further.

i had a feeling that this was what he was referring to, but i find it really hard to believe alternate dimensions fit in with the dwarf fortress universe though... multiple dimensions is a very modern concept so it seems really out of place in DF's setting.

multiple worlds is a very old idea, multiple dimensions is a lot newer. for example there is Fayre in European folklore or the underworld in Greek mythology, or the  worlds in Norse mythology  although they are separate from our world you could travel between them, i imagine it is something more like this than alternate dimensions

DF talk 16 goes over the ideas they're looking at for planes in more detail. Stuff like various afterlives, fairyland type places (the more bloodthirsty kind I would guess) and pocket dimensions creatable by NPC and PC mages.

I suspect we call them dimensions nowadays because worlds≈planets, and now we know that planets are EVERYWHERE and rarely are as fun as the myths. Dimensions are the new "they're, uh, somewhere. Look, we have portals to them. You in?".

Cado's Magical Journey (by Threetoe) had some examples of planes like the Imaginary, Faerieland, the Shadow world and the Underworld.

Out of all dimensions the ones I most want are those that I can create myself as a mage. The possibilites are so huge.

The exact same thing with different words. The only thing new brought to the table is their concurrent nature.

Basically. :) It suffices for the HFS to be far below the surface, but I don't think it would work very well if heaven was always a few hundred z-levels upwards.

It would definitely be interesting to have such things in game, even more so if they were somehow accessible in Fortress Mode too. Although I'm sure there is plenty in line before multiple planes are even really looked at.

Just think of the possibilities for space efficient forts though. A small 2-3 z Fort with some type of portal connecting to a few different planes on which you can use the same area all over again for a different use. The possible consequences of such a thing just adding more FUN.

Changing between unlocked dimensions wouldn't really be that hard interface wise, basically just adding another set of buttons like the up/down z level, but for unlocked dimensions. Doing all the work to make them work as part of the game, and not make people's computers explode, is probably going to take a while when/if they take a look at doing something like that though.
