Yes, battle axes seem to have the best overall score.

How much armor is the target wearing? Is it total coverage? Or partial?

Or you could use a bladed repeating javelin thrower and have a weapon just a lethal in melee with an ranged attack.

Yes, battle axes seem to have the best overall score.

How much armor is the target wearing? Is it total coverage? Or partial?

Pike of dragonslayer is the best weapon, something to try to get via researching/inventing.

I was taking into account ease of access as well in my statement.

Okay, so total head and body coverage, but legs, arms, and torso are wide open.

Do entities have aiming preferences, like do they see a lack of armor on a body part and then proceed to target that part? I haven't had any major fights in my fortresses yet, so I don't have a lot of data of my own to pull from.

I don't think so, iirc it is based on the relative size of the body part.

You seem to be under the impression that we're playing some game other than dwarf fortress. It doesn't matter how powerful you make a creature, we will find a way to destroy it. God is dead, and Urist killed him.

To properly rate ranged attacks, you would have to take into account rate of fire. I can think of no good way to do that.

It is one of variables, changing with, I think it is called SHOOT_FORCE or something to that effect. If all ranged weapons were the same it wouldn't matter, it would cancel out.

Ammo is, of course, another variable. I could try making some custom weapons to estimate the effects, but I am not sure how good of an estimate that would be. I may attempt to tackle the ranged weapons at some, but not until after I finish the melee one, and a couple other projects.
