btw, 3 gigabytes of memory can handle at least 3000 dwarves well enough

Sure, you can handle half of my village population, but what about other creatures, fluids etc?

The memory limit is more of a problem on large embark sizes if I recall correctly.  Creatures don't use that much memory, maybe a few KB.  Each map cell doesn't use that much either, but there are exponentially more of them with increasing embark sizes.

First things first: wait a few versions to wait out most game-crippling bugs.
And them wait more for fixing some of old, old bugs.

This will be Unfun.

First off, thanks everyone for the info.  I've only started DF with the help of the newb pack or the original mac builder.  The default max dwarf setting was set so low, I had no idea that I could bump it up that high.

But reality is saying that there may be some complications bug-wise with a large fort?  In any case, my last fort hit max in no-time, so I'm looking forward to tacking on another 1000.  I just won't gripe about it if they start mating with chickens. :)

This update is bringing mountain dwarves and deep dwarves right? Those will be fun to play with. Other than that, I suppose I'll turn my dwarves into paratroopers jumping down from giant redwoods to crush the elves that are worshipping them.

I plan to play at least 6 hours a day  until I kill every last human on my first world world.

Standard DF procedure, people find bugs, report them and then proceed to kill Elves in creative ways with the bug until its resolved.

Thinking too "now". Go with elves.

Geeze, a thousand dwarves would be a nightmare with job management, even if 90% are just various haulers.

Also, imagine clothing that population size, lol XD. While its true stuff like workflow will help, you still have massive amounts of items. Actually, the clothing industry wouldn't be that hard with dedicated clothiers, it's dealing with all the worn clothes that would be a nightmare.

Screw clothing, just have loads of depressed naked midgets.

I'd love to hear that out of context.

Well, imagine if we had the new/old economy to go with this.
The clothiers would become rich as hell.

In a world where only the filthily rich can afford clothing. A Duck Leather Thong is worth tens of thousands of Urists. Clothiers live like kings, and are kinds, since they can afford to buy nations.

I was going to mention putting at least the haulers into squads to get them to wear armor, both to help with worn clothing and give some added protection, and then I realized how many squads you would have to create...

Even if the game could handle that many dwarves, why would you ever want that many. Just imagine how many children there would be.

Not to mention feeding that population and of course, you have to provide beds for all of them and a dining room (or multiple) that can feed and fit hundreds at a time, no, you don't need a fort for that, you need a CITY.

The pathing for thousands would be a nightmare as well.

my plans are to play me some dwarf fortress :P and try to conquer the world if it's possible.  And to those who say they're gonna wait for the "bugs" to be ironed out, DF doesn't have bugs, only temporary awesome features.
