Taming savage people into citizen ?!
« on: September 04, 2013, 03:19:16 am »

Hi all,

I have cage traps all around the map, so I catch a lot of things. I tamed what I could, but it was my understanding that you cannot do much with X-man or woman (hihi) except drawning them and use their bones (still no adamantium, though ... ok, I stop).

I noticed this :

What is going on ? I have a Bushtit woman in my citizen list ...

Heck, only the elves would tame a leech. [...] Just for this, I'm starting up lead goblet production. Anyone who tries to sell me a tame leech deserves to die from lead poisoning.

You probably got it off the elves.

Also: don't swear, people just won't answer your question in future.

Thanks for the hint (english strangely lacks of "low" curse words compared to my language. Or I'm not good enough :) )

I didn't get anything from elves, but humans are repetively leaving my fort before I can even try to trade, and they leave stuffs behind. Maybe this Bushtit Woman came from that.

What can I do with her ?

Damn, hell, heck, crap, and so on are usually  "low impact" curse words.

On subject: I know certain intelligent species that become members of your fort (like gremlins) can become mayor eventually, since they only socialise instead of working. Meat eating ones just die off unless you provide them with meat constantly though.

Noted. Bloody hell is acceptable, not f*ck. Ok for me. Funny ... this is how I would speak if I was purposely trying to sound british.

Let's go back to the point : so in fact, other races can Tame creatures that the wiki define as untameable for me. Ok. I cannot assign this creature to my pasture, and I cannot give her anything to do... so useless for me right now.
I was afraid I killed all those creatures during all those years when in fact, I could use them for something.

It would be fun to have a bunch of enslaved tamed savage creatures that would be assigned to all the hauling, for instance.

If a sentient that you can tame/buy has any knowledge of the fishing or ambush labors then they'll go and hunt/fish since those jobs are done while idling and they can only idle. I had a fort once where I modded plump helmet men into tameable fishermen. Stupid things wouldn't stop breeding so I started throwing the older ones off a cliff. Gremlins are always caught with the ambush skill so if you can catch a few gremlins and tame them then they'll hunt for you.

Nice ! First gremlin I encountered was put in pieces ... what a waste.

I did tame Giant animals and stopped selling them because they always seem to attack goblins during embushes (it saved me some war dogs :) )
Animal-men or women can't do that. Few times under water solves the problem of overcrowded cages.

Creatures with [PET] and [CAN_LEARN] can become fortress citizens once they've been tamed. As far as I know only gremlins and tigermen have it for some reason.

It's possible to modify the region raw files to allow captured humanoids to be given the ability to perform other jobs. I'm not sure in this version but in older versions you could control captured creatures by hacking their race into "dwarf." They would maintain the body-type of a creature of their type, however, so they couldn't wear armor as it didn't recognize armor in their size. If the creature didn't have a grasp, it couldn't use tools or haul.
