You spend a good amount of time trying to help, but it isn't of much use. At the very least, you don't think you've managed to make anything worse.

You wander back out of town and into the night, making your way back to the overpass checkpoint. The troopers stop you again, explaining that the road is currently off-limits to travelers.

"Hey, anything here catch your eye?" She asks.
There's some parts and scrap, as well as a whole load of random bits and bobbles that were scavenged off from somewhere. There are a couple of hammers, an old box of eye hooks ((I'm guessing that's the kind of thing you'd meant by the nails)), and even a bear trap in reasonable condition.

Look through to try and find anything that could be used to make explosives. I'm not going to say what in particular because my character would know, but I don't know what chemicals are needed to do so.

The Bear Trap comes up at a cost of 150 Caps.

You look around for possible components for explosives. It doesn't look there are really any materials that could be used to make the actual explosive part of an explosive. However, there are a few Sensor Modules (A key part of home-made Mines and the like) at 60 Caps each, a few Cherry Bombs at 12 Caps each, and an old lunchbox. Lunchboxes tend to be a favourite case for mines, specifically the infamous bottlecap mine. Though that's 20 Caps.

Buy 2 Sensor Modules, five Cherry Bombs, and the lunchbox. Then ask about the eye hooks and hammer.

You spend exactly 200 Caps on the items before asking about the hammer and the eye hooks. One of the hammers would just be 15 Caps, and the box of Eye Hooks 20.

It takes you a while, but eventually you find a dark little corner untouched by the crowds where you can work in peace, using a Sensor Module, the Lunchbox, all five of the Cherry Bombs, and 20 Bottlecaps to make what is hopefully a functioning Bottlecap Mine.

That took more than I expected. Ah well. Time to go check in on the rest of the people.

Stash the mine wherever my stuff is/where everyone's stuff is, look at the armor merchant's wares.
