Another option would be to have everyone in a single company, though that could quickly lead to chaos.
Aha, now I'm wondering how quick we would, or not, go bankrupt. :D

After much anger, head-beating on keyboard and finally giving up setting a compiler to make my own patched OTTD build, I have looked around for patchpacks, and found something interesting.

HardPatchpack

Gonna run some tests on it. Main features I'm going to use from this patchpack is the taxes, and slowing down the game time so you don't have to upgrade from steam choo choos to maglevs overnight.

Server is down until further notice. I'm still evaluating possible patchpacks.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

I know people say late game is sandbox mode, but nobody actually does anything with it. You have tons of money. Build something crazy AND profitable because why not. My maglev intersection from a few days ago was a "let's build something that travels everywhere on the map and isn't a plane." I ended up not building it big enough. There needed to be more lanes for more trains in and out of the intersection. I had fun though. It was my foray in big intersections. Sure you can build a long straight line of vacuum tube, but that's not even close to "Let's Build Insane Trains Together." I'm not hearing "this is sandbox mode." I'm hearing "I don't want to play OTTD anymore."

Hopefully this modded "harder" versino shouldn't be so bad. Max age for vehicles is a complicated issue to tackle atm because a lot of GRFs have shit getting outdated but not replaced into the 2000's, and the nature of GRFs makes fixing that quite complicated since i'd need to hunt down their source code. I'm putting up a server for evaluation of balance, it might get nuked if I derped something, but otherwise it'll persist. I'm not too sure on how well this patched OTTD will perform in the server's hardware (it's a six-year-old dual core laptop)

Open openttd.cfg and change the language. english.lng or english_US.lng if you sprechen sie englisch.

That pack is russian sadly, but changing the language is quite simple a step. I'm liking our balance so far.  :) Time passage is also much slower, I think we run one year every 40-60 minutes.

Apparently I leased all my vehicles. I guess double clicking just leases? Or you can't do anything but lease....

you managed to overestimate the amount of disposable cash i had that day

and underestimate the cost of these lines for good measure

they were $80mil each at the least and i have no idea how signs work

I've tried the new harder server now, and I think I finally might manage to go bankrupt :)

The most important thing to note is that mail and passengers work like in TTD, that is: they are just like any other cargo, and they disappear when delivered.
That means you can no longer make the expansive and exponentially growing amount of passenger/mail.
Rather, to profit from passengers, you'd need to make very long connections, between big cities.

I like that mail isn't just magic money any more, but somewhat dislike that you can't make the realistic network of train lines.

How did my company go under? I was making money and lots of it last night. What the heck. It looks like everyone went under. This isn't hard mode. This is Desert Bus. I can't babysit a company 24/7.
