A house divided (Aurora 4x)
« on: September 02, 2013, 03:14:38 pm »

Humanity had been standing on the brink of war, and extinction, for ten years before nearly every nation agreed to the necessity of the earth being ruled by a single governing body.
Whilst a few governments refused to acknowledge that humanity needed to stand together, they either got toppled by their own people, or were rapidly annexed by the superior forces of the supernation, which was named after the organisation that, ultimately, founded it: The United Nations.

The earth was then cut up into 'sectors' of roughly equal population, and resources were distributed as evenly as possible. Whilst there were flaws with the system, such as bribery, they seemed to have a minimal impact on it. Many predicted that the government would inevitably become tyrannical within a few decades, but that was unable to happen.

Within about five years of all of this, the earth was invaded by an unknown extraterrestrial force. Population centres and military fortifications were levelled by orbital bombardment, and alien forces arrived shortly afterwards. Outnumbered and using weapons that could barely damage the enemy forces, the remaining military forces were forced to retreat. The areas that the military could retreat to began to get smaller and smaller, and the human population began to drop rapidly.

After several months, the situation looked grim.

In one last, desperate bid, the remaining scientists and soldiers managed to capture several aliens, and attempted to create a disease to wipe them off earth.
The scientists managed to extract a disease from one of the aliens. It appeared to be some DNA with a pair of bases not seen on earth, surrounded in a protein coat, much like some earth viruses. With this, the scientists began to create their bioweapon.
The fighting had reached a point where the military would be annihilated within a week, when the scientists finished the bioweapon and, using several modified missiles, distributed it among the aliens. Within a matter of weeks, the remnants of the military were pushing back the aliens.

The scientists were rewarded for their work with an orbital bombardment on the lab they were working on, along with the surrounding area, killing the scientists and destroying the remains of the military.

After several months, the aliens had been nearly completely removed from the earth. The orbiting alien ships had stopped sending out reinforcements, and, soon, began dropping from the sky. This lead to many areas being rendered uninhabitable as heavy metals, radioactive elements and antimatter spilled across the impact areas.

The heavy metals made living there impossible for any extended periods due to the poisoning, the radiation from the radioactive elements killed off any encroaching life in the areas, and the antimatter, when it collided with the land, created giant explosions and large radiation bursts, wiping all existing life in the area. However, due to how scattered humans had become, only a small amount of the population was killed by this.

Several decades have passed since then, and surviving humans have banded together. Old human tech has been salvaged, bringing humanity's technology to that of the early 21st century, and nearly all humans are ruled by three leaders...

So, you're looking for players?

I'd probably recommend turning Invaders off, since they slow everything down and are kind of annoying.

Uhhh. I might want in. How active is this game gonna be?

Preliminary data:
Name: New World Federation
Government Type: Standard Player Empire (gameplay); Democracy (Fluff)
Country it starts from: All America, from Canada to Argentina. And the UK if no one minds. :P

Edit: Also, a few notes on game settings: I recommend invaders turned off at the start, as well starting without any NPE running around (they'll be generated once we start exploring. It's just that starting it with one can lead to some very annoying slow down if it starts interacting with anything else. Let they appear when they are actually meaningful. :P)

Name: United Provinces of Eurasia
Government type: Conglomerate of Corporations and Socialism; Democracy(?)(Owning a Business is considering a Public Office, so you can't run for president or such; leave the business to someone else, and just happen to be invested heavily in it, then you can, though.)
Country/countries it originated from: Most of Europe and the former USSR, plus Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, and Nigeria, part of western China, and Japan.
Some Notes: A Province is typically named after the city that functions as it's capital, since so few large cities are left these days.

I would advise starting at 600,000 Pop for each nation.

A sidenote: On conventional start, it might be good to increase resources a bit further. It's quite expensive to actually get to the point where extra-planetary colonies are viable.

A lot of people double the starting resources anyway, so I'd suggest multiplying starting resource by 5. Allows a bit of competition, but still plenty.

Edit: Meritocracy, for starting government please.

Well, then I guess I meant to ask what the starting population was.

Can you PM me my scientists when you create the game? What I get might influence my research schedule.

On a sidenote, please put the "training level" on my race details to 5 please. ^^

After a quick investigation, is this what it does:

Makes the officers, civvy admins and the like better, but produces less of them per annum?
From what I remember, it doesn't affect the named officers, although I might be wrong. The effect I do remember is that it does that for the nameless ship crew. Since I tend to build extra academies anyway, it's not a big problem for me.

Yeah, it increases the crew grade of your ships, but decreases the pool of junior officers you have to work with. Run out of junior officers and all your ships drop to 'conscript' level.

Oh yes, by the way, could my commander theme be primarily German, 20% Russian, 15% French, 15% Chinese, and 10% Arabic?
