Alright, here we go:

Love Polygon
Irrational __
One And One
Set Theory
Love's Complement
Prime Romance

"The Fundamental Theorem of Osculation"
Looked up what Osculation means. This is the best one so far; Math-y AND romantic at the same time.
Crap. I did too, and I've been had.

(a little bit like the structure of Hatoful Boyfriend, maybe, though I could see it being more like Katawa-Shoujo; in any case, all fluff will be murdered with prejudice)
Funny that you mention that, because my friend brought up Hatoful when I mentioned this to them, as it seems right up their alley.

Posting mostly to watch, though I also offer my assistance with any help needed with the Ren'Py stuff...I'm a terrible artist though :(

b. There will be at least one same-sex option and one opposite-sex option if I have to kill myself finding data on a female mathematician to put in.

You could look at Hypatia who in addition to being a first string 4/5th century geometrician was also something of a cultural icon due to her martyr status.  We know that in addition to being a mathematician in her own right she was a leading teacher of mathematics who headed an academy so you could cast her as the sexy school mistress.

Or if you want to go really far back, there is archalogical evidence that many believe shows the first mathematician in history (that we have evidence of) was a woman: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishango_bone
Obviously there isn't the faintest clue about any details of her life besides where she lived, but you could maybe think something up.

I'm quite familiar--I was thinking more Noethur than Hypatia because, well, there's more data and she's bloody amazing.

I didn't know about the Ishango Bone, though!  I'll be sure to reference it somehow.

Of all the posts I skimmed over only to later find had spawned an entire thread, this is probably the most unusual.

I am just saying. Depending on how Mathcore you're going here, she might make a good Best Friend/Lancer Archetype.

As for framing devices, you could go with the "Don't Explain a Damned Thing" device, and just accept that these people are all going to school together (ideal for Max Hilarity and Tongue-In-Cheekness), and leave the characters unaware of their historical counterparts. If you want to leave more potential for plot, you could say that they are the reincarnations of their namesakes, who were mysteriously drawn and/or specially invited to attend a private school (but who invited them, and why?! :O :O :O)

You could also set things up so that the characters names don't match their namesake (they could be anagrams, or a more clever obfuscation), and part of the fun is getting to know them, so you can link the character to the figure they're the reincarnation/clone/expy of. Perhaps that could be part of the characters individual story arcs; discovering their "past self" with the MC's help (or revealing their past identity to the MC, if they already knew, as a personal secret).

Anyway, this could be very entertaining. Posting to watch. :3

Hahahaha

Yeah, so I've decided female MC and they're all going to grad school together, maybe?  I think I like Lovelace as the lancer, quite a lot.  Maybe the MC is a lit. major.  The GH Hardy expy (though not actually an expy) is going to probably be a surprisingly immature postdoc.  He'll be the jerk-with-a-heart-of-gold character, with a bit of a mean streak, and highly neurotic/self-conscious (I'll take cues from Norbert Wiener, too).  I'd like to incorporate the Newton-traits I was thinking of into someone else.  And, I need someone who's more gentle and sweet.  And someone who is fun and upbeat.  Hurm.  I think I'm going to try to build temperaments first, then fill out majors and other such things.  There should be someone whose arc heavily incorporates dealing with academic pressure, too.

I'm also thinking that it's going to be waaaaaay more on the pastiche side and waaaaay less on the historical accuracy side (since "grumpy and irritable mathematician" is not a good personality for five characters), but I'm going to keep stuff like "passive-aggressive email collaboration" in.  Just, lots of elements that are part of STEM culture, but maybe not so many explicit references.

Maybe I'll have one character who is a straight up historically inappropriate expy.  That could be fun.  I think it'd get really wearing as a gimmick, though.

Make the historical guy the magical janitor who can solve the worlds problem but just -really- likes cleaning. And being enigmatic.

You know -exactly- what kind of janitor I'm talking about.

How about for whatever plot device reason the lit major has to reach a certain level of mathematics in a limited number of semesters, and therefore needs to seek the help of the characters to do so?

Also Hypatia is going on my list of names I'd hypothetically like to name my children.
