You can, and I do, but you don't actually have to in almost every case.

You also don't have to live in a house, but it's generally considered to be a good idea.

Whoops, looks like my 58% high school English grade is showing. And it was on that exact kind of thing I kept tripping up on... except for the whole turning in assignments thing, that was a problem for me, too.
