Dang I just can't get the hang of signalling.
What exactly is it you wish to do?

I can't build a simple two-track multiple train railway, gotta start reading about the signals again.

God DAMN I love this game!

All you need is one way signals then.  Just drag them along the rail in the direction you want that rail to go.

I build highway like two wide rail way to facilitate long range travel and then have single lane splits to connect resources and factories.  Any point were I have a station on the two lane I put a rail going around it so any train that needs to go past won't be stopped by trains in the station.  Also don't be afraid to have many lanes at stations.

Hmm my rails usually are 2-3 lines per rail crossed near the beggining middle and end (and any crossroad with another rail that's relevant to the current production line).

Basicaly it looks more or less like this.

Station1=v====v=====vStation2
Station1=X====X=====XStation2
Station1=^====^=====^Station2
                      ||
                      ||
                       S
                       T
                       A
                       T
                       I
                       O
                       N
                       3

With 2 way signal lights EVERYWHERE (where they are needed so before and after any intersection)
It's expensive but can serve a LOT of trains at once with barely anyone having to wait.
I use this often on production chains with more than 2 stations like Oil->Refinery->Towns.
It's also pretty breakdown proof since only breakdowns in small parts of it can paralyse the network.

Signals are really something you want to learn when using railroads.
Or you'll see what i saw

If someone wants to help me test and see if this is set up correctly, send me a message. I'll make the thread if someone can connect without issues.

As a challenge, is it possible to cause a train to collide with itself?

I never really got into those tycoon games, but all this talk of trains crashing into themselves and whatnot has me interested. I'll have to get into this.

So for trains it's best to have a cycle rather than a back-and-forth?

Yep. A back-and-forth means that the track can only be used by one train at a time, or two with some logistics.

Well that is what happens when the world's prime form of income is transportation.

Now it's building trains on the roads that leave just enough of a gap between going on and off to let vehicles on, just to run them over a second later. Quake has 10 vehicles left.
