This game looks badass, it really is a pity there's no emulator for online servers... PTW, but I really ought to play Freespace 2 first. :P

Why do enemy patrols come in fours when Force carriers only ever send out two fighters for a patrol anyway?

Because its probably not a patrol. Its probably a wing on an assault mission.

Thought of that after awhile.

And they usually come with a fighter escort. That's a total of six fighters.

10/10, would get stuck spinning in a broken fighter with a dead reactor and thrusters again.

Ohh man, I remember this... I was one of the beta testers. I should be in the credits somewhere.
I vaguely remember there being some annoying gameplay features and a handful of not quite outright bugs that never got fixed that I found a little frustrating, and I never ever quite made it to the end of the campaign.
things like not being able to send a destroyer group away to get repaired and having to keep using it even though heavily damaged.
Definitely a good game though, despite those things that I found annoying. I wonder what happened to the dev Milo. and some of the other beta testers.

Wow, random lunatic whose only post is to necro a three-year-old thread.

Also enjoyed this game.

You didn't miss too much about the end of the storyline, just some sudden whams.
Spoiler: Spoilers if want (click to show/hide)

As for not being able to send destroyers away for repairs makes sense when you consider that the campaign is almost completely in real time. The kind of damage that needs to be repaired(besides subsystem damage, which does take a while on its own) is implied to take weeks in drydock. My biggest annoyance with it is that the enemy seems to be able to jump their capships away at will when threatened, making it hard to actually get a kill.

Yeah, however having to stick with being in command of a group that's next to useless because of damage was somewhat frustrating. needed some sort of game mechanic to alleviate that, other than knowing exactly where to aim at the enemy ships so you could take them out quickly enough without taking any damage - which seemed like a little bit of a cheat to me, wasn't sure if that was an intended mechanic, the weak spots felt way too weak to not be an exploit.

Another little niggle from memory was that the mass for the fighters didn't *quite* make sense. from my fuzzy memory they were about 4 times the size of a typical modern atmospheric fighter, which is probably ok, but they were also 4 times the mass as well, which felt way too heavy. this made their atmospheric handling really sluggish, way too much slip. I felt like this needed to be tweaked a little - sure a multi-role fighter shouldn't be as good as something with a dedicated role(I think the hegemony had a dedicated atmo fighter? I can't remember, did it perform better?) it just felt like it was a little *too* much like an over powered brick.

There was something with the ai nav and trying to chase down a ship that was running away too. I forget what exactly.

The main sad part to me about Starshatter is that not much people ( coding-able people of course) have been interested to pick up on the source code, and so it has gone nowhere yet, there was so much potential with this game and its dynamic campaign.
Though there were some videos on youtube hinting at someone having done something with the code, but the starshatter open board is so dead unfortunately.

Sadly...Google Code as primary repository.  License feels like "wants to be MIT" (have not fact-checked).

Obviously I can't commit to doing anything with this (between Rogue Survivor Revived, and a vaporware turn-based roguelike-like).  I don't know how bad the DirectX dependency is (I don't see anything else particularly inimical technically).  Target language MSVC++, so the DirectX isn't clearly instantly fatal for a fork.

This game looks neat, will try it out.

Had some issues with the links in the OP, however, so here is a link to a bundle torrent I found on the thread the OP links to that works and has all the mods, plus a nifty patch that adds more voices.

it'd be a pity if this died. it was a good game.
I think I might be in the credits as a beta tester... wow that was a long time ago.

yeah its super-dead. basically no one ever did anything with the sourcecode after 6 years. Still works in windows 10 last time i checked, so its not like its unplayable or anything.
