We Need Some Way To "Ward" Off Vampires
« on: August 31, 2013, 09:29:20 am »

Vampires, in my opinion, are a much bigger threat to my fortresses than sieges, forgotten beasts, and titans.
They are extremely hard to detect most of the time ( even when I study every dwarf's history carefully ), and are capable of killing off an entire fortress in a fairly short amount of time.

I just recently lost one of my fortresses due to 5 vampires I was unable to detect early on, and it's frustrating as #### ! I have since switched all my other fortresses to having dormitories for sleeping, however that has not stopped the killings.

Why can't we grow garlic in the gardens, and craft "decorations" with them ?
Why can't I craft or engrave different "religious" icons that can keep vampires out of certain areas of my fortress, or better yet repel them from entering it in the first place ?
Why can't I have a priest(ess) that checks all the dwarfs for vampirism ?

Don't give everyone private bedrooms.   Make a mass dorm with a meeting area in the middle and they're caught usually on the second or third victim at most.

If they're seriously hampering your enjoyment of the game though, there's a few ways to easily find them.  First is in Dwarf Therapist you can show who's cursed.  Another is via DFHack.  Just check one of them for each migrant wave and you can cull them immediately out of your game.

While I like your ideas, I'd recommend presenting them as game enhancements to make things more interesting and make a post on the suggestions board for people to mull over and try to streamline.  I'm not sure Toady comes into the discussion and gameplay boards.

If you really don't like dealing with them you can modify the parameters when setting up a world gen so that there aren't any created.

Even though they are undead, they don't have to be your classic vampire that burn in the sunlight (though if they are cave adapted, that's something else entirely).

Also, what Oaktree said.

There are a few weird mechanical ways to scan incoming migrants, but probably the most effective is to find the most skilled members of any wave (particularly if they've got skills and a bit of military ability) and then check how many fortresses they've been part of.  Most vampires were members of dozens despite a relatively uninteresting age: once you've established that, you can guarantee they're vampires by nicknaming them and then seeing if their deities cursed your nicknamed dwarf.

Having said that, being able to detail guards to suspected/important individuals would be cool.

It's super easy to mod something in that will murder vampires.

Make a work shop called "crucifix" that produces a free stone that insta-boils.  Have the stone vapor affect only dwarves with the vampirism interaction.  Have the syndrome be something super-horrible, like full-body necrosis or fatal bleeding from the eyes.

Using the manager, you can specify suspected vampires to use the shop.  If they're clean, no harm done.

If they're not, well, then...I guess you'd better get a mop.

You should make them burst into flames or explode outright (Trueblood style) if you are going to do anything like that. The added chance to burn down half the fort just makes it that much better.

I think your dwarves just need to stop inviting people into their dwellings.  It's tough though since vampires ask so politely.

Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)

Well, if you embarked in an evil biome or have necromancers for neighbors, you can always use zombies to test for vampirism on the way into the fort. Put a zombie behind a window, and a vampire will happily walk right by it (presumably into your vampire killer trap of doom), but the regular migrants will flee.

Even with 70 (or 150) dwarves, checking every dwarf for thoughts about eating/drinking/sleeping doesn't take that long. You can even make a macro to look at the next dwarf, to make it take a bit less time. If there's a suspicious dwarf, give him a nickname and look through deity relations (especially the actions) and see if someone with that nickname was cursed.

Huh, I see vampires as free bookkeepers.  Give 'em a nice room, and build a disposal mechanism, then set you counts to the highest precision.

I also use Dwarf Therapist to confirm which dwarf a vampire is, so I am technically cheating, but I try to figure it out first before going to check DT.  So far I've been right in my hunch every time.  Checking the thoughts is pretty useful, especially if you work from the most recent migrants back.  I don't consider using that feature of DT cheating, but your milage may vary.

I think im in for some fun in my current fortress, because the fucking King of Dwarves himself is a vampire.
Im unsure if i should really invite him, but on the other hand, why the hell not?

Preferrably from a distance.

Make the vampire your executioner as well. Got a dwarf who needs to be put down? Make him bunk rooms with the vampire book-keeper. You keep it fed, and you get rid of problems with it. Win-Win.
