than he run into a 3 wood - spiked - ball trap.
the trap insteadly turned him into a master pice statue.

Much better that your original post, but probably not ideal. The cage traps will be generating a lot of prisoners that would otherwise die to the second row of weapons or to the stones.

IF you want prisoners, the cages go in front. If you want the cages to be a sort of last line of defense, they go in back.

Putting the stone traps in the back was excellent, since they are one-shot. Anything that makes it through will already be wounded, so they should finish it off.

Id say you are now safe from the troll  ;)

From my fort:

On the two small bridges that connect me to the two sides of the map:
one row (3 wide) of weapons traps made of 3 steel trap components (serrated discs, giant ax, spiked ball)
a second row of cage traps.
The exact same repeated on the other side.

At the only entrance in to the mountain:
A row of weapons just like above
A row of cages
A row of one-shot pressure plates connected to a cage filled with war dogs.
Further in (past the depot, but before the stairs down) there are 3 rows of stone traps.

As of yet nothing has released the hounds.
The weapon traps kill most of the random single goblins etc.
I capture quite a few with the cage traps to feed my hydra.
