Speaking in terms of RAW data, picks have twice the contact area and penetration depth of a sword stab with nearly twice the velocity. They also only have one kind of attack, so you don't have to worry about stupid dwarves refusing to do anything but bash with the handle or something of that sort. They are definitely quality weapons. I think the next time I fiddle with military stuff, I'm going to make a pick squad.
