I think Tumblr includes functionality to use your own domain without having to mess with the code: http://www.tumblr.com/docs/en/custom_domains

Also, Tumblr supports Discus for comments. I already have it installed on one of my blogs.

I think most of this could be done automatically. I think I wouldn't need much in the way of hosting after all. The only issue I really see is that most people don't actually go to someone's Tumblr page to see their posts. They just "subscribe" to their blog, and all their new posts come out on their dashboard. I certainly almost never visit other people's tumblr pages. So in order to actually get traffic for ads, you'd have to find a way to persuade people to come to your actual site instead of just subscribing to your feed. I'm not sure how one goes about doing that.

I'l have a look at that link for adding google ads to tumblr, quinnr. Thanks for that.

Oh, I didn't realize that. Then yeah, with all the stuff you can do with themes and stuff, all you'd have to do is alter/find a theme that suits you, and add the custom domain. Sorry, I didn't realize that that was an option!

Yeah, I'm not sure how you would go about getting regular Tumblr users to go to your page...I mean, I almost exclusively visit different pages and never check my dashboard, but I'm probably in the minority of Tumblr users. (So I guess your target audience would have to be non-Tumblr users?)

Well, setting up AdSense on tumblr is a no-go unless you have your own domain. The reason they give is that you have to have access to the source code of the page to insert the ad code. I DO have access to my subdomain's code, but they won't let me do it that way. So I will need to buy a domain to run ads. : (

That's much cheaper than hosting though, you could probably get it for around $12 a year, if I recall correctly. (Plus a domain name actually helps a lot in building a popular website, it will make you appear higher in Internet searches, I believe, and also just looks better.)
