Let's Mod - Wizardry 8!
« on: August 27, 2013, 02:53:04 pm »

So the other day I got a great idea for a total conversion mod for Wizardry 8

What's Wizardry 8, you ask? Why, the last of it's kind, of the old breed of the CRPG's of the West. Party-based affairs where your whole party moves as a blob in first person, to engage in turn-based combat with the various roaming monsters of the dungeon. Different from the older specimens, Wizardry 8 features a fully 3D environment, making moving around on the map and positioning part of tactical considerations, as opposed to the standing around trading blows of yore. It features a somewhat odd fantasy setting populated with both the generic and strange, as well as with a hint of sci-fi in that you can fight androids and get some nice tech weapons from some aliens, who are competing with you and everyone else to become the new Gods.

Anyway, I likes me some sci-fi in my fantasy, so for the setting of this mod there shall also be modern and futuristic splashings in a fantasy world. But, there shall be one major difference in the design of this setting: a distinct wild-west flair. Yes, this means desert areas, people with wide-brimmed hats, and many more guns than the muskets and occasional phaser of the vanilla game.

Well, the people on the Wizardry boards love all the mods they can get, but here's the problem: they don't want to be spoiled. In a genre and series reliant on puzzles of many scales, they'd like to experience each playthrough finding things out for themselves. They're more than happy to help with the technical side of modding, but discussing story, level design, puzzles, monsters, pacing, and all that other stuff, they don't want to know.

That, my friends, is where you come in! Design, ideas, playtesting - a real collaborative effort we shall make!

You can mod W8?? PTW. I love W8. Got way too incredibly difficult for me around that one tree-village, though. I got beat down pretty bad last time I played.

You mean the Trynnie city?  The ratkin shouldn't be that difficult to fight...And you can always wander around the base and fight plant monsters for exp.

Anyhow I'd love to see a mod to this glorious game.

Tree-city with some sort of a zoo in it? Place with a bunch of treants and such in a temple-thing, don't exactly remember. I had a magic heavy party, though.

Yes, you can mod, with this: http://mad-god.webs.com/cosmicforge.htm

I've already got several parts of the first level done, screenshots shortly.

The only tree city would be where the Trynnies live.  I can't recall any treants offhand, however.  But I'll admit that it's been pretty close to a decade since I last played.

Those would be the wood spirits. They had these gnarled staffs that they beat you with.

Anyway, screens of the first level:

If any of you still has the game installed, I could give you the files... when I think of where to upload them. Or I could email them, but that might be messy.

Man it has been a long time.  Yeah.  I think I remember those.  Umm...set them on fire?

So, here's the layout of the level so far:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The big chamber will lead out into a large canyon, but I'm thinking of having several rooms branching out from that spiral ramp leading down from the balcony to the floor. Do you think that would be distracting, or do you think that makes it less linear in a good way?

I like it so far. Is it possible to make a good ship-analogue in this game? I'd love a ship map.

Probably, and it might be in the cards. I've got a spaceship planned, and was considering a sea-ship as well.

But would branching off from that spiral ramp be a good idea, or should I just go straight for the canyon?

Started work on the canyon. As this is the starting area, how big should it be, for pacing? People should probably be around level 5 when they come out, but perhaps not?
