Combat Log
« on: August 27, 2013, 01:47:37 pm »

Ok, I'm a long time player of Dwarf fortress, and now I decided to test masterwork while waiting for the DF update (continuous history will hopefully be really great..) and It seems to be very good. But a long time problem I have with DF is the combat log, it really makes me lose interest in scrolling all those different logs for the same battle, and tons of pages.. I saw on the description of masterwork the "Better Combat Logs" and that would be great (even if I could somehow use in vanilla, but that's another story..), but I haven't found how to actually use. I went to the battle log and had the traditional view, and haven't found anything on the configs for Masterwork.. Any help?

That means there are more diverse moves and actions that occur in the heat of battle. Each weapon type has many different types of attacks instead of the typical "slash" "stab" moves. This is most evident in Adventurer mode; you can see about a dozen moves listed for almost each weapon, each with their different flavor. Does that make sense?

By "flavor", Lottanubs there means "only use the whirl around with outstretgched (sic) arms because that's the best by far" :P

Yeah, that has been done a long time ago. I should probably give them more, but equally strong attacks to balance it out. I am just waiting for the next DF version, because it has new combat raws, and I dont want to change it all, just to have to change it all again.

Speaking of, is there a chart somewhere in the manual or elsewhere which lists the data for all the different weapons and armors, such as the one on this page?

Not yet, but it isnt far away. Maklak is working on perl scripts to extract such data. I just have to compile it into a nice html manual page.

Fantastic! Good to know. My adventurers will certainly live longer once they they know what their weapons and attacks do.

Well, at the very least I'll know the difference between spears and pikes.
By the way, do you happen to know if there's any benefit to wielding a weapon multigrasp? It's certainly possible for adventurers (and possibly by extension Dwarf-mode dwarves and invaders) to swing around a zweihander with one arm, but do attacks land with greater force if the weapon is held with two hands?

.. Should this question go in a different thread?  :P

I dont think there is a difference. Multigrasp is just for fort mode, if the weapon is too big, creatures have to use both hands and cant use a shield anymore.

It also counts in adventure mode. You get penalties if you one-hand a multigrasp weapon.

What kind of penalties?
