Leo squeezed the hand he was holding affectionately.

"You know, I was thinking that maybe we could write your mother another letter. I'm sure she would want to know the news. Maybe next time we're in town we could see her."

Alec could try to hide, but Miguel had been in too many relationships to be thrown off the scent that easily. He chuckled heartily.

: "Hohoho! Yes. Politics. It is certainly tiring isn't it?."

But he had also lived long enough to know the signs when not to press the issue. This was one of those times. Miguel gave him a knowing pat on the back and strode forward.

: "Come along now. We'll walk and talk my boy. Good conversations are never had on idle legs. Are you feeling better today?"

"Yeah, I'd love that! I could share all the good news with her, and let her know I'm still alright... And then actually see her in person next time." Sheila wasn't paying any significant attention to where the two were walking, just walking along beside Leo.

Alec, seemingly breathing an inner sigh of relief, walked at Miguel's side.
: "Eh. Turns out, swamp fumes, talks about Emperors, War and-... well, more War don't mix. Had a bit of a headache earlier... might be coming back."
: "Makes me miss simpler days when I was just a trader's kid, and I'm not even the one doing most of the fighting."

"Then let's see if we can borrow some materials off of my brother, later. I'm sure he has paper and ink."

Leo had been subtly guiding the pair of them to a large fountain in the middle of a square, and he sat on the broad wall of it.

Miguel nodded sagely.

: "Yes. War and the Emperor never seem too far apart, but it does get quite dicey whenever you start adding in the swamp gas."

He took another noisy bite out of his apple, admiring all of the lovely ribbonry. Say what you will about the Empire, it knew how to celebrate. He thought for a moment, then asked a question.

: "You did mention that before, didn't you? Perchance, do you remember what your family dealt in? I'm just a wee curious, y'see."

Sheila sat close to Leo, wrapping an arm around his waist. "Yeah, definitely." Sheila looked around at the festive atmosphere, watching the people reveling in the streets. "...It's kinda weird, isn't it? The timing of this festival, I mean."

"Perhaps so, but at least we have something to celebrate."

Leo leaned in closer and kissed her.

Sheila responded to the kiss eagerly, moving her free hand to the back of Leo's head where she ran her fingers through his unfortunately short hair.

Alec cocked his head at Miguel's question, and apparently after some internal deliberation, explained lightly.
: "Luxuries, mostly. Fine silks, gems, occasionally even trained horses from Masalla. Not like I can't remember, I had to deal with people way above my class, and plenty of pirate attacks to boot."
: "During the off-seasons, we transported weapons, armor, tools and other steelcraft from Garaz. Not on our own business, really, mostly just chartering out the two ships we had."
: "Why do you ask?"

Leo noticed, and as he finally pulled away it was with a rueful laugh.

"I know. I've been meaning to ask Candy if fairy magic would help, but I'm afraid of what the side effects could be."

Miguel waved the question away.

: "Oh I don't know. Old man curiosities y'know."

He paused.

: "Hrmm... I suppose the real question I wish to ask is why you stopped being a merchant's son. You seem to have enjoyed it well enough."

Sheila hadn't been thinking about the hair length. At least not consciously. So she looked at her husband with confusion. "Huh? What are you talking about?"

"Oh, uh, you were playing with my hair, and I remembered when it was cut you said you preferred it longer."

"Oh. I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to, like, drop a hint or something. Even when it's short, I just like your hair. That's all." Sheila collected herself and thought for a minute.

"Are you sure getting Candy to help with that is the best move though? I mean, his magic seems kinda... Random. Maybe like an apothecary might be a better place to check."
