"Ah-haha, yeah, about that..." The historian scratched the back of his neck, staring at the ground.
"So, disasters, right... The most important was probably when we... Sorta lost a fourth of the entire continent to a mixture of floods and earthquakes about a hundred and fifty some odd years ago. Mireos was split from the main continent and all that remains of the lands once there is a few islands, one of which little more than a large salt flat." "Theeeen there was sort of a plague a hundred years after that. It... Was bad. Very bad. Took years to recover. The rebellion almost directly after didn't help much either. You still sometimes find empty villages." The scholar grimaced.
"...Oh, yes, right before the flood was a period we call the 'Seven Years of Fire.' There was a great number of spontaneous fires in both forests and farmland, so on and so forth. Forgive me for almost forgetting it, it sort of loses its relevance with what followed." "Now then, monsters, monsters... This falls a bit outside my field of study and more into personal experience. They still exist, although in lesser numbers than in your times, before the 'Twenty Year Crusade'. They've are starting to creep back into settled lands, giant spiders and gargoyles at least. Well, I suppose I've seen more, yes, but those tended to be locked up in old ruins left by the Dragon Mages or their apprentices. Typically undead. Sometimes... Less... 'Dead', more 'Un'." The historian recalled some less-than-pleasant situations in his past. He pushed them away.
"The swamp.... Swamp?" The historian paused for a moment, thinking.
"I... Oh. You mean the magic wasteland. It was declared a lost cause and left at that I'm afraid. References to it are scant and hard to find in historical documents, most tended to just ignore it I think. I've heard rumors about communities who dwell around the edges, cutting into the swamplands hunting for something they believe might be there but I've not put much stock in that." Fezz paused for a moment and sighed.
"I suppose the best I can offer being the rumor speaks lengths about how it has been dealt with. The only purge I know of in history would be the Blue Purge."
