Sheila nodded. "Leo's with her. I'm sure she doesn't have a scratch on her by now."

"So, that's her body all well and good. But I think accidentally killing that head imperial really shook her up. And dealing with Efa's sister couldn't have helped."

Alec sighed.
: "At least there's that. Could you do me a favor and try to keep her spirits up when you can? I would but... I'm not exactly in the right mind to, especially after that confrontation. I think I'm one of the last people she wants to see for a while."

Candy was floating, stealthily, beside Sheila and Alec at this point. He was staying silent after the events of the evening, lost in thought, but something Sheila said made him speak up.

: "I've been thinking about this all night. It doesn't make any sense. We've seen two people working for the 'Empire' who should be somewhere that's definitely not here! My brothers may be evil, but they're from Troy! Why are they fighting over here? Just the same, Efa didn't remember her sister joining the fight, and she wouldn't say much about why she did. And then there's this weird magic, and Berserk staves!"

: "I'm not sure we're fighting the Empire we think we're fighting."

"Well, I'll do what I can, but I really think she'd appre-" Sheila visibly jumped when Candy appeared and started talking out of nowhere. "There's only one Empire Candy. If there was another, I'm sure I'd have heard about it."

Alec blinked, and then seemed to contemplate.
: "It's a stretch but... Maybe there's something to be said here. Berserk staves, reanimating magic, a lot of magical resources have been put against us, and as far as I know, only us. My only guess would be..." Alec scratched his chin, "Maybe someone in the Church has much more interest in us, personally, than the rest of the Empire? Not to mention Duke Sepin explicitly reminding us about the Church's power, perhaps he's alluding that they're pulling strings in the court to get at us?"

Sheila looked back at Alec. "But what's so interesting about us? I mean, aside from the fact that we're a bunch of crazy tough fighters who can carve out hunks of armies 5 times our size I mean. There's gotta be other rebellion forces that would draw their attention more, don't you think?"

: "It's just a guess. There's no concrete reason but, I mean, Candy's brothers and Efa's sister? All of them possessing magical capabilities that we don't know about? Something's up with that."

: "I could be wrong. Maybe they're just being really unconventional because of how good we are at rebellion. But still, it seemed like Efa's sister was being controlled somehow. I don't know of any magic that would bind a person and then turn them to ash."

"We're really not that good at rebellion. Just at killing people who get in our way." Sheila sighed and ran a hand through her hair. "I'm getting really tired of chopping people in half, y'know?"

[Furtuka]

"As much as I hate to say it, Sheila has a point. ...In the greater scheme of things we've been off the front lines and have not done much of importance since we left Kretos. Do you think we might have something they want?"

"I kinda doubt it." Sheila said, sounding somewhat annoyed. "I mean, we went a whole month without an incident of any kind... If we had something they wanted, they'd have made their move sooner, don't you think?"

[Furtuka]

"Maybe it took them some time to find us?"

: "Or it took some time to get us out of the public eye. We haven't been out of the cities much since we left Kretos."

"...Considering they're using heretical magic, it would make sense that they wouldn't want witnesses..."

Ciera slowly sat up. With a frown, she nodded to herself. The only way to stop being a burden was to just leave the group. She couldn't continue dragging the rest of them down. It would be better for everyone if she left. Yeah. She stood up and slowly slipped out of the room. She headed quickly to the room she'd been staying in and grabbed her pack. Ducking back out into the corridor, she headed around the corner and almost ran straight into Alec, Sheila, Julius, and Candy. Wincing, she quietly muttered,

"Ah, sorry, I, uhm, I was just... _leaving..."

She turned around and went back the way she come, trying to figure out the best way to escape without running into more people. Maybe she should wait a bit?
