The scholar didn't say anything while Grifen checked him over, but when she finished the man gave the nomad a hug. He held it for a moment before backing off, sheepish about his impulsive show of affection.

"I... I think we both worry each other a bit too much for our own good."

Turning to the present situation though, the historian explained a bit. "It was rage magic. I think they just call it... Berserk? An apt name. Its a magic that manipulations the perception and emotions, driving one to great rage and confusion. An awful, terrible magic, banned by the empire for good reason."

"Which makes me wonder why people wearing the empire's trappings were using it."

Grifen gasped in surprise at the hug from the normally-taciturn man, but quickly relaxed. The hug was over a bit too soon, but Fezz clearly had other things on his mind.

: "So uh...yer thinkin' that maybe those guys weren't actually Empire soldiers? Maybe some other folks who wanted us to think they were?"

"Maybe... I'm not sure. We can't be important enough that they'd break their own tenets to fight." The man chewed his lip in brief silent thought.

"I really don't know. This isn't normal though. Something's wrong with this whole situation. Who joined the fight? Why did they target Candy? Why just leave...?" The scholar sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "I... Think I may have an idea, but I'm not sure. This doesn't make a lot of sense."

Realizing how far away from the group they were, and how the enemies suddenly left and arrived, the historian didn't feel the safest. "I think we should head back to the others, maybe they know something."

Candy floated over to Fezz and looked around at the battlefield, still dizzy from the bowl.

: "Yer right, Fezzrobe. Something is wrong. Like, we're in Masalla, so what's my brother doing out here talking about enemies of the empire...?"

: "Oh, right. That pink haired man with the bowl was Amana Divola. I don't know if he's completely bad like Manna is, but he sure was being mean."

[Sirus]

Grifen was briefly irritated by the sudden appearance of Candy, but she let it go. He was sort of the topic at hand, wasn't he?

: "Well, wasn't there a big kerfuffle over us killin' that commander last month? Would that be enough of a reason fer them to break out the really nasty stuff? Those Berserk staffs, and whatever that crazy thing was they hit Candy with?" As she talked, she lightly tapped the two men with her healing staff.

[Powder Miner]

Efa gave Miguel a strange look.
:"Your fantasi--"
She groaned and waved him off, yanking some of her wet ponytail from under an armor strap.
:"Look, let's just not talk about it. I'm just... I'm done with today. Let's just get to the damn castle already."

Alec still on the ground, doubled over. The shock of a lance going through his chest was apparently still there, even though the wound was sealed.
: "Owwwhow... _{That was my best jacket...And my lungs...}"
Sitting up with his legs crossed, he noticed the Artist's Mark sitting on his chest and pocketed it away before noticing Ciera hovering over him.
: "Er... Feeling alright, Ciera? No residual effects?"

"I... I stabbed you. I don't... What if I'd killed you?"

: "That's why we have Mop-top and the others here, isn't it?"
: "But to think they would resort to something as heinous as Berserk magic to try and take us down... They're really desperate to do away with us."

[Swordstar]

Ciera opened her eyes and stared sadly at the man. Her eyes were still slightly glazed over, having not completely shook of the effects from the staff, so though the haze covering her mind was gone, her emotions were still in turmoil.

"I... I never wanted to hurt you... But that magic... I couldn't do anything about it. And so I stabbed the man I... the man who's never been anything but nice to me... I... I should go. Scout. Make sure there are no more enemies on the way."

Tears starting to well up in her eyes, she turned away from Alec and started back towards Mazin.

Alec raised his hand, about to call Ciera back, but apparently ruled against it and scowled.
: "Just know that I don't blame you, Fly Girl. Berserk magic..." The bard sighed heavily, "This is exactly why it was banned. Damned Empire."

[Swordstar]

"... I should have been able to fight it. I should have been stronger. _{I should have been able to stop myself from stabbing the man I'm falling for...}"

She pulled herself onto Mazin and set off, flying low over the battlefield and on towards their destination, looking for any enemies along the way.

Alec stands up and looks at the others.
: "Let's follow up. We went through this much trouble, we should at least see what it's all about. Miss?" The bard addressed Iva.

"Um, um..."

The tiny girl looked at all the mercenaries, and blushed. She kept blushing for a while, before her shyness got away finally.

"Um... well... I don't have a husband. I have a master. I'm a kitchenmaid of... um... well you're gonna meet him anyways so, well, I work for Duke Sepin. He wanted to meet you and he asked me to take you here because it was the most secret way he could think of. The imperial spies shouldn't even be here... Oh! Oh no, what if, what if they are already in the castle?! My lord could be in danger!"

Fezz nodded at Candy's appearance and words without missing much of a beat, having grown used to the strange man's sudden appearances and disappearances by now.

"I'm glad to see you're okay. I have no idea what they did to you but it didn't seem pleasant. Your own brother is trying to kill you though? I... Suppose that rules out my guess as to what this was all about, or perhaps who they were." The man sighed, back to square one now, scratching the back of his neck.

The scholar also nodded at Grifen, she raised a good point. "Maybe... I guess I may be trying to find new enemies in the old. I don't know. I just don't figure for the Empire to turn its back on its tenets just to fight us."
