Julius lowered the spear and wiped some sweat off his brow.

"I could be better. Today has not kind to me."

[Sirus]

Grifen dismounted so they could be on the same level.

: "Sorry to hear that. Wanna tell me about it? Anythin' I can do to help?"

[CrimsonEon]

Alec looked carefully behind him at Matilda and Yonn before turning back and scratching his head.
: "They were forced into service, more or less. Matilda was sent to Setine, I don't know the details but it may have been due to a tip I happened on, and on her way she picked them up. Mercenaries, most of them. By the time they got back, Duke Mireos continued his... rather frustrating habit of loyalty-by-intimidation."
Alec lowered his voice further to ensure he wouldn't be heard by anyone else.
: "Matilda isn't exactly repentant for it. Not to mention her rather unique strategies regarding battle and diplomacy don't have everyone thrilled." The bard sighed before adding, "Normally, I wouldn't be at liberty to say, but I just know sea-legs will happily give you her edition of the story, filled with lots of cursing."

[Swordstar]

"O... Oh. I... I see. I didn't realize..."

"That's just... Ugh, I can't believe that. I feel really bad for them."

"But... But they fought for her here. Couldn't you all have just left? If she's so... like that, why did you all defend her like that?"

[Furtuka]

"Unless you know some magic spell to make a person stronger, probably not."

[Sirus]

: "I'm...sorry, no. I don't know any magic at all yet, and I only know how to make medicine. Maybe there's some sorta potion to make people stronger but I don't know it. Sorry..."

[CrimsonEon]

: "Hm..." Alec scratched his head, recounting the events of the battle.
: "Mop-top. That guy over there with the priest robes. Ignore the fact that he doesn't have a mop-top, just play along." Alec pointed over to Leo, "He made a promise to Duke Mireos that he would protect Matilda, and no doubt like the stubborn guy he is, he stuck to it. Sea-legs stuck to him, others had their own grievances against the empire, and Lil' Miss rallied me to stick around to help keep everyone alive."
: "I guess... He was the only one really out to protect Matilda? And even then only to keep his promise, I don't think he's particularly fond of her either. Safe to say everyone in this group has their own reason to be fighting the Empire. I suppose it's as sea-legs said earlier, they're not idiots, they may not like Matilda but they're not going to abandon a potential ally."

[Furtuka]

"Don't trouble yourself. I wasn't expecting you to."

With a sigh he pulled out his notebook and began flipping through it again.

"Back to the drawing board I suppose..."

[Swordstar]

"Huh. I see... I guess that makes sense. Those priest types always want to stick to their word and all. And the empire hasn't exactly made friends. Well... I hope they all find happiness either through this or through getting out of it safely. So, uh, you sure like nicknames, huh? Not having any of this whole calling people by their real names fad?"

[Sirus]

: "Sorry..." She looked at the notebook in curiosity, wondering what the normally-masked man used it for.

: "Um. Iffen ya don't mind me askin, why is gettin' stronger so important to ya? Ya seem to do okay most of the time."

[Furtuka]

Julius sighed and snapped the book shut.

"If you want to make any meaningful change in this world, you need to have strength. If you're weak and unready but try anyways, those with more power than you will just beat you down. That's what I learned when I got this"

He pointed at his scarred eye.

"And so that's why I have to become stronger. It's the only way I can fulfill my dream."

[CrimsonEon]

: "Well, at this point I'm going to have to look after them one way or another. So, damn it all, I'm going to try and make sure they make it alongside the rebellion."
: "The nicknames? That's just a thing that I do. Call it a bet with myself; I declare something that I think won't change about a person and see how long it lasts. Sometimes it works..." Alec glances over to Julius, then Efa, then Leo, "...aaand sometimes it doesn't."

[Swordstar]

"So I guess, uh what was it, Mop Top just got a haircut recently then? Seems like an interesting way to remember people. Too bad the bet's one sided. If they change, you win, but if they lose you also win. Do you hand yourself a gold piece every time someone changes that thing?"

She grinned at him, clearly joking.

[Powder Miner]

Efa smiled as she crouched a short distance away from the imperial captain she killed, a smirk on her face. She'd done it! She'd actually managed to take down an imperial brigade and even save a rebellion! This was like her wildest dreams come true!

However, she found herself approached by the old horseman... Miguel?
:"Oh, eh? I didn't loot 'im. But... oh, good shooting, THAT is something I've never had said to me before today, ever! Today's been a damn good day."

[Sirus]

Grifen winced at that.

: "Oh. Oh jeeze, I'm sorry. That musta been hard." She started to turn away, but then was apparently struck with an idea and turned back.

: "Maybe...have ya considered tryin' to change the world another way? I mean, there's always gonna be someone stronger than ya, so why not make yer dream come true by doin' what yer good at? Somethin' that maybe other folks can't do?"
