Leo looked at Matilda and shrugged.

"He is the new duke around here. Don't worry. Your father asked me to protect you, and I'll do my best, but please don't push the limits of my promise. If you anger Yonn there's not a lot I can do for you."

Alec, hearing Yonn's speech, slowly shadowed out of the room and outside of the chamber to see what the commotion was about, but on seeing the scores of soldiers, immediately held still for fear of provoking a reaction. He kept his eyes on Matilda from a distance.

"Y'know... From what I've seen of Yonn, on the whole... I think I like him." Sheila went to round up the rest of the troop, telling anyone she ran into that "Hey, Yonn's taken over the vacant Duke position, let's all get to the throne room. He said he's going to permit a short stay but he probably wants to talk about stuff."

Julius quietly went back to the others, and looked at the old Duke's corpse.

"...serves you right you old bastard."

After all, this was the man who had turned Kretos into the hellhole it was today. The slavery, abuse by the aristocrats, this man had allowed it, encouraged it. From a certain perspective he could be considered responsible in a way for almost all the misfortune that had occurred in Julius's life, from his parents almost selling him to Eleanore's death. His death could be seen as heroically slaying a monster couldn't it?

So why did this battle feel so pointless?

We've put Yonn on the throne, he'll surely do better. So it's good right?

"All right. We'll wait here for everyone to arrive."

Leo put his arm around Fezz's waist, keeping one of the scholar's arms over his shoulders to keep him steady. As he waited, he thought about things Grifen and Sheila had said. It was odd that Fezz had the exact same hair color and even the same level of thick shagginess to it as him. They stood the same height. They both had an affinity for light magic. According to Sheila they had the same nose... but he was an only child, right? That's what his parents had said. No one had ever said otherwise to him. It was something to mull over, and he was clearly lost in thought as others entered the throne room.

Several minutes later, all were in the audience room, where Matilda spoke with Yonn in hushed tone for a while. Yonn also spoke with elderly priestess after that. Then, he moved to the grouped mercenaries and nodded.

"I will honor my promise and let you stay for few days. Three at most. You will have clean beds and warm meals prepared for you."

"In the meanwhile, I will send a message to my father to prepare some escorts and to send the money and supplies. Of course, your payment included."

"By the way, I've been informed you have not harmed any of the priestesses during the battle. I'm most pleased to hear that. The High Priestess of the castle also has a gift for 'the handsome brother who watched over the sisters', I assume it must be Leo. Here, this is the gift." Yonn handed Leo a jewelled ring, vibrating with power.

"Er, well, I don't know about 'handsome'... but I'll humbly accept the gift. Thank you very much."

Leo took the ring and looked at it.

"This is...! I... I'm not sure that I'm worthy of such a gift."

"I believe you can't really return it, so keep it."

"...I see. I suppose I'll have to do that. Again, thank you. I'll meditate on this matter."

Alec quietly stood beside Matilda and spoke in a hushed tone hopefully low enough only to be heard by her.
: "Lady Matilda, I'm not keen on the idea of staying for too long. The late duke said he prepared extensively for our arrival, and was ready to present evidence to the Empire. Are we sure he hasn't already sent word, and there could be a detachment on their way as we speak?"

Miguel did not have to be gathered for he had not left the throne room. His eyes glared at the pile of decayed filth that stained the throne of Kretos. He spat upon his skull of the old duke.

: "May the spirit of Troy the Lionhearted see your soul to hell."

After Yonn and Leo had spoken, Miguel dismounted and clapped the priest on the back.

: "Don't be so coy lad! You have conducted yourself honorably beyond any mere measure of a mortal man. You and the scholar are surely living saints, for the great powers invested in your two souls seem to be beyond mortal measure."

With Leo indisposed, Sheila took the time to say her piece to Fezz. "I appreciate what you did back there. I know you have a hard time with fighting and killing and everything but... It was necessary with the duke. very necessary. And I'm sorry I wound up leaving you to do it on your own. I was going to come in and support you... But then you handled it. So thanks."

"...Well, that's exactly what this ring is, Miguel. It is given to priests who have, through virtue or deed, proven themselves beyond reproach. To wear this ring is to be canonized. Saint Leopoldo... patron saint of mercy, I suppose."

Leo took his right glove off and slid the ring onto the appropriate finger, then put his glove back on over it. He flexed his fingers idly, staring at his palm.

"I don't feel any different. Perhaps it is because a saint's power is the ability to help others, not themselves. Yes. That makes sense. I'll take the time before we set out to meditate and figure out exactly what power this ring has given me."

Grifen rode into the throne room with all speed, coming to a stop and dismounting near Fezz and Leo.

: "I heard all the fightin' and came as soon as I could! What happened?" She began applying various poultices to the scholar's wounds.

"The former duke thought he could fight Fezz and win. He was greatly mistaken."

Leo moved away slightly so Grifen could get to all of Fezz's wounds without him being in the way.

"We definitely owe our victory to him. Our archeologist is quite impressive!"
