Grifen's mood took a startling turn at that last sentence.
: "Heh. Marriage. Right."

She was silent for a moment.

: "...Preacher, how do marriages work out here, outside of Masalla? Ma said something about folks marrying whoever they feel like it, and I was wonderin' if that were true."

"...Mostly true. The upper classes - rich merchants, nobility, royalty - still tend to have arranged marriages. But for the common folk, yes. We tend to sort out these matters by ourselves. Admittedly, just like the upper classes, occasionally marriages are arranged for various reasons - to unite land, for example."

There were worse reasons, but Leo didn't want to go into them.

"Are arranged marriages still common in Masalla?"

It sounded as if they were. Maybe he could lighten the mood by teasing her about it...? Well, that could be risky. He didn't want to put his foot into something he didn't know anything about. All the same, his curiosity was aroused.

"...Grifen, do you have someone waiting on you to come back?"

[Sirus]

: "On the plains, yeah. It's hard to meet other people yer age if yer not related to them, cause of how spread-out folk are. That's why we still have matchmakers, especially fer first-born children like myself. To give ya an idea, Pa broke over a hundred years of tradition to propose to Ma instead of lettin' a matchmaker choose his wife, and he nearly lost his position as head of the family over it."

Leo's teasing unfortunately had the exact opposite effect he had been hoping for. She sighed, her head hanging low.

: "If there ain't someone by now, there will be shortly after I get back. That's what it means to become an adult; you ain't just old enough to get a name, yer old enough to get married, too."

[SeriousConcentrate]

"I see. Sorry to hear that."

He thought of something, and it was ridiculous enough to make him shake his head with a laugh.

"Well, if it was good enough for your father, maybe it's good enough for you? Perhaps you'll find someone on these travels and bring him home with you. One can't be married to two people at the same time, after all."

He put a hand on her shoulder reassuringly.

"I understand that it's not something you look forward to. Marriage is a scary prospect, even if you know and love your partner. I can't imagine what it's like to have it thrown on you. But it won't do you any good to dwell on it, as if it's the end of the world. As I said, maybe you'll find someone before you head home. Or maybe the man your parents pick out for you will turn out to be the 'right' one."

"One of the joys of life is that we don't know what tomorrow will bring. Look toward it with expectation, not apprehension."

That was what he believed, anyway.

Monetary transactions complete, Tacey was now anti-everything. Almost.

There weren't many shops. One of those was selling some strange seaweed wraps with dark meat, from Kretos. There was also seller of exotic fish. Part of his supply involved lungfish, tuna, sharks... as well as stranger specimens: three-eyed shark, crocodile-mouthed salmon, and a pair of cods with tentacles instead of mouth.

"..." Sheila had fallen silent as the subject had turned to arranged marriages. She couldn't really imagine being asked to marry someone she didn't know. The prospect made her shudder.

"Ain't she a beaut'? Straight from the purple waters of Port Eastway!"

((Gah, sorry SC. Sleep hit me like a sack of bricks >< ))

Grifen felt a brief flash of anger towards the priest. Easy for him to say! He wasn't worried about getting married at all, let alone to someone he had never met before! To be traded off like some so many sheep...how could he possibly understand?

Her anger quickly subsided however - now she just felt depressed.

: "It just ain't that simple, preacher. Can we drop this? Talk about something else?"

Sheila leapt on the chance to change the subject. "So, Kretos? That'll mean more sailing unless I'm much mistaken." Sheila smiled at the prospect.

[Sirus]

: "Oh, we're going on a boat? I bet yer looking forward to it, huh Sheila?"

It occurred to Grifen that she had never seen the other girl on the water before. She was already so strong and skilled on land...what would she be like at sea?

Leo rubbed the back of his neck. That had went rather poorly; he shouldn't have put his foot in it. For now, he'd just shut up and let the girls talk.

Efa went into deep thought for a minute.
:"...Awesome. Would I need some sort of special thing to eat it, orrr...?"

Sheila nodded, with a smile spreading over her face. "More than you know! The plains of Masalla might be your home, but the seas are mine. I'm never more at ease than when I'm on a ship."

Grifen couldn't help but smile in response to Sheila's obvious enthusiasm.

: "I see! I'm guessing ya must've been sailing most of yer life, then. Any good stories?"
