You open your office door and stride in, full of confidence.
“Good morning, sir! Sorry to keep you waiting.” You smile in the most sincere way you can manage. “Please, have a seat.”
The angry man eyes you up and starts gesturing wildly.
“Listen here, I've been blown off by everyone else about this whole pile of shi-”“Sir, I assure you that I am here to help you and will do everything in my power to do so. However, I can only help you if you explain the issue. Now please, sit. I insist.”
Your customer hesitates a moment, seems satisfied, and sits down as a fraction of ire drains from his face. You pull your office chair out, set your
briefcase on the floor beside you and sit in your own chair.
PERSONA PROSPECTUS UNLOCKED: Professional
Years of office politics and corporate peer pressure have honed your “placating smooth-talker” skills to a razor edge. You know what to say and how to say it in the most socially disarming fashion, and dealing with idiots has taught you how to keep a calm demeanor in the face of stupidity itself. However, maintaining this facade takes its toll on your faculties. You are somewhat emotionally detached and occasionally feel a strong urge to stab someone with a ball-point pen.
Effects:
+2 to diplomacy and composure rolls.
-1 to emotional and sanity rolls.
Professional Persona activated!“Alright. My name is Seamus Maccready. I represent the current owners of 15 Kurzweil Plaza, which your employer now holds in escrow until the end of next month.”You nod. This is one of the
important documents in your briefcase, but the last you knew of it, the entire transaction was in order.
“I see. Mister Maccready, are there alterations to our current arrangement that I can make for you?”
This must be why Harry dropped this on me. Busy work. “No, it's not a problem with our business. It's a problem with the buyer. T&S Sundries refuses to close the deal, and my employers have … informed me that if they don't sell this property as planned, they'll be unable to reimburse your company. I tried to tell your boss that, but he kicked me out of his office and told me to talk to you.”“Well, I'm sorry sir, but that's an issue you'll have to settle with the buyer's real esta-”
“I tried talking to them! They turned me out, said there was nothing else to discuss, the sale was null and void.” For a brief moment you see something – desperation? - flash over Maccready's face.
“I hoped money would talk for someone here. If the deal falls through, you guys don't get paid.”At this point, it was pretty clear that if Harry didn't get paid,
you don't get paid. That settles it, then.
“Alright Mister Maccready, I'll see what I can do. I need some time to look over the documentation.”
(Professional) You retrieve a
business card and write your personal extension on the back.
“If you need to get in touch, contact me at this office. Charlotte will put you through to my phone, or take a message if I'm not in when you call. Is there anywhere I can reach you if I have questions?”
Maccready gives you his home phone number, takes the proffered card and nods at you as he awkwardly leaves your office.
-1
business cardYou open your
briefcase and examine the
important documents relating to 15 Kurzweil Plaza. The manilla folder contains financial documents and the escrow arrangements you made for the deal, but nothing of interest about the transaction itself. That kind of thing would be in Harry's office. You tuck Maccready's phone number under the paper clip holding these papers together, and replace the folder in your
briefcase.
These serve as your "character class" equivalent for our tale. As you can see, they subtly affect how you react to others, how you handle particular situations, and at times provide specific bonuses (or penalties!) to your abilities. Some events are directly affected by the active Persona, and these effects carry over between switching Personae. If you switch away from Professional, you still have a direct line to and from Maccready without going through Harry.
Changing Personae invokes a 3-update "cooldown period." New Personae are not activated instantly and begin on cooldown. You can switch personae with consensus as often as you like apart from the cooldown period, but gaming the system may have certain....unforseen consequences.
I apologize for how long and railroady the prologue updates are. Once I establish the foundation of the plot and get the OP indices up, updates will be shorter, with more player input and lots more freedom.
Also... I'm completely clueless about all the escrow and financial stuff, so take it with a grain of salt. Bob Noir is not a lawyer or a financier, and any pen-stabbing or crazy undershirts portrayed herein are not legal counsel.
