Erm..that is beautifully deformed! My compliments, sir!

I just remembered something, don't know why I didn't think of it before, considering I do it all the time.

Draw a whole bunch of circles to represent the mass of a body and create some hideously/beautifully deformed creature, it'll turn out better than you think.

try ratmen or some sort of grendel-like abomination.

... Thought that my help the creative juices! Try it or don't: you're purty darn good! Better than me that's for sure.  8)

I don't understand what went wrong
So majestic. They should've sent a poet.

Or long-ish rectangles/polygons, if one would like a more... angular-ish style. That is, if I'm understanding you right. You might be talking about some other style of arts that I've never seen. But I somewhat doubt it, since I've no clue what else it could be.

In other news, quest for decent camera is a resounding failure. Which is just as well, all things considered. :I

Thought I'd try some non reference work this weekend. Trying to draw various poses from different perspectives. And failing pretty bad. :(

This is so fiendishly hard, kind of feel like giving up as it's been nothing but frustration. Maybe I'm just not cut out for this, maybe it's just something that comes natural, or doesn't come at all?
Feels like I'm just wasting time, should focus on things I actually can do...

Don't think like that. Keep the fact that 'anything worth doing is hard' in your mind. It's a bit of a cliche, I'll admit, but it's pretty thoroughly true.
Keep at it, at any rate. Sketch regularly, read the books on the subject and hey, simply have the desire to improve and after a while you'll see some improvement.

I'd recommend doing a lot of flat, side-on drawings first. It's only a small step up from there to figure out where the legs will go to make it look more 3d. For drawing things like animals, I would use a circle or other cross-section shape for the front of the torso, another for the widest bit of the torso, and a final one for the back of the ribcage. The same design can be used for the skull, if with a few more cross-section shapes. After that, connect the lines from the top, bottom, left and right parts of the circles, and fill in the gaps to make the shape.

More TERRIBLE ART

So, things I've done from my List Of Things I Hate Drawing in these two drawings:

Image with poorly-drawn hands
Full figure image
More terrible character design (kind of wish I'd just made her entire arm Sword, but heeeeey)
Drawing from the side
Figure with dark hair
Practicing unshaded lineart that Makes Choices
Figure with bare arms
Figure with decorations/patterns of any sort on clothing

Admittedly these aren't very good, but I'm trying to catalogue for myself that I'm here, genuinely trying something I struggle with.  So, I'm proud of myself for working hard on those side-facing images (the single angle, other than views from the back, that I've always had the most trouble with) and jumping into full-figure design, even when it could be better.

I think I might actually try drawing a character with an actual pose next. . . but we'll see.  I'm having fun, anyway.  Thank you for reading, everyone.

If that's your definition of bad, I'd hate to see your definition of good.

If anything, you've got a good handle on faces and form, but work on noses! They look almost right in both pictures (but are very implied in the first one).

Yeah, part of the issue on the noses is that I'm drawing too small (can't get the friggin' detail to come out of my pencil, hence the sharpening on the paper in the upper right hand corner), and part of it is that I can't draw things protruding straight forward yet, and part of it is that I'm terrified of giving an Asian character an enormous beakish thing just because I love hooked/aquiline schnozzes.  Noses are a known issue I'm trying to get better at, since my source style of Extreme Animoo doesn't seem to like drawing them all that much.

I'm also working on jawlines/cheeklines from the side. . . the top one is okay, but the bottom one has demonstrated to me that I still don't know the proportions yet (I keep trying to draw chins too small and foreheads too large).  So, I'll probably draw another figure from the front, and then from the side for my next "feat."  With a big nose, the way I like.

Thanks, by the way, for the very single-point criticism.  It's making it much easier to try to progress.

Everybody hates drawing hands.

Your art reminds me of a guy I knew in highschool.  One year, I got a look at his drawing, as he had been teaching himself to draw manga-style.  As of then, it amounted to incredibly rote near-traces of DBZ artwork, with exactly three different poses, muddy hands and blank eyeballs because convincing eyeballs are really fucking hard to draw.

Little over a year later, he was drawing brush-stroke-style portraits, still very manga but also very personalized, with excellent posework and action-lines.

You're already better than he was at year one, and you have an obvious talent for it.  Obviously practice is a huge part of it, but I would honestly say that trying to find your own style and letting it guide your work instead of trying to guide your style would help.  The cheeks are a little off and the ears are a bit too far back, but don't be afraid to consider that trying to draw realistically could be hampering you.

I should note that I just kinda dropped into the thread to offer advice, you might have already said that realism is very important, in which case disregard all that.

... just because I love hooked/aquiline schnozzes.
Speaking as someone who has one... I know that the Romans thought they were very regal, but I seriously never expected anyone in this era to ever say anything affectionate about them.

:/

That art isn't terrible >_>

Sure, there are errors, but that's damn good.

Problems I've found with sideways (not a 90 degree angle from facing you, more like ~45 ish) facing characters is how the face is structured, then the perspective of shoulder alignment--if those two things can get set straight, then the whole body follows..as far as I could see from observation, anyway.

You're doing terribly well Vector.

...Also I see nothing wrong with how you draw noses..they're as varied as facial structure. Also hands. I saw nothing wrong with that hand (ok, assumed it was the left hand-there's a finger height for every part. It's a miniscule amount, but the tiny difference sorta matters.

Everyone hates drawing hands at varying levels.)

FTFY  :)

Great work Vector, better than what I would likely come up with in a few minutes right now. The only thing that struck me immediately was that the chin in your 2b drawing seems just a bit too low.
