Alright well.. I've been doing a ton of reading over the past few weeks, so I'll try and summarize stuff that's been posted elsewhere in this thread. If anyone with actual knowledge and experience corrects me, heed their wisdom! :)  Also it's late, so... I blame that if my brain is muddled.

Anyone have tips on perspective in that context?

I'm guessing by how you said it that you're referring to the viewing angle of a piece with respect to the point of view of the "camera" that the picture is drawn from, i.e. the perspective viewpoint of the illustrator. "Perspective" in art refers to how figures in a piece relate to the horizon of a picture, and pictures come in one- two- and three-point perspectives. I know a bit about why that etching is wrong, but I'll get there in a minute.

For drawing things w/o a subject... well that's fine. Everything, at its core, is just a series of simple shapes that combine to make a larger one. Human bodies all have the same basic ratios, and you can get pretty close consistently with a little practice.

Imagine a ball with two lines that intersect at a right angle in the middle, forming a +. The vertical line bisects the nose, with the eyes on each side (and about an eye's width between the eyes). The top of the ears join the side of the head at the horizontal line, about halfway around the ball. Under that there's a bit-larger-than-head ribcage, the spine, hips. Elbows fall at about the ribcage and your hands fall around where your pockets are (the hips). Legs are about torso-length with knees in the middle and feet at the end. If you follow something about like that you'll be pretty close, and working from the top down is by far the easiest (or only) way to construct a body.

Here's some examples of the head proportions I did for Loomis practice (you can see my guide lines not-fully-erased, especially in the first one), and a re-link of the skeletal frame I sketched for the Lorraine pic earlier:

The torso is way too big, and everything else is roughly proportionate. If I had been paying better attention, I would have shrunk it before I moved on, but I kept drawing and made everything else out of proportion to the head. Also... shoulders do not work that way.

That etching is awesome, and it's not shading that's the issue. Take a closer look at where your brain tells you things logically must be, and where the picture tries to tell you they are. As objects move away from you they appear to get smaller, and they farther they are the smaller they get.

Start with the foreground man with the fishing pole. He's fishing in the same water that the guy sitting on the bank is... but there is a building between them. To reach that far, the foreground man's fishing pole would have to be taller than he is or longer than the building is wide, at minimum, to reach that far.

The near swan in the lake is the same approximate size as the bull next to it. The man in the boat is about as far away as those dog-sized horses drawing the miniature cart over the bridge. My favorite is the fellow smoking a pipe on the far hill; he's the same size as the person leaning out the window... which from that far makes him as tall as the oak tree he's standing near. The sign on the building is blatantly impossible, and the roofs imply that there are two buildings oppositely sloped on different sides of a very steep valley that can't be the one the swan and fish are in. There's more, as well.

That picture really does illustrate how perspective works. Though..it leaves a lot of space for assumption. That was a nice catch on the etching there.

Okay.  Working on remembering how to draw various stuff.

I'm definitely better at drawing consistently than I used to be.

You should probably use a model for anatomy pictures.

Jelle: Your person is kinda disproportional, even though it could be some alien humanoid.

Yeah, the subject of the drawing isn't typical human, I figured it would be a nice way to start off drawing anotomy without to much detail required.
I was actually sketching by an image I took, not feeling brave enough to draw from the imagination.

Might be offtopic a bit, dunno if coloring is part of thread topic. If it isn't, nevermind this. If it is, here's me trying to figure out how to do shading working further on the image I had. I messd around a bit, then focused on the head.

I'd like to see the reference pic, yeah.

And you have a good eye for detail if you've really never done anything like this before. Part of the reason it's a rough start is using Paint and a mouse to do it; that's a pretty awkward set of tools to learn to work with.

With that as the reference, I'd say that's a pretty damn good job. I will say that it looks flat. Part of that is the lack of shading, and another part is it looks like you were just copying the lines, not using the structures they represent. take a look at this video:

Fair warning, probably nsfw; it's a video about how to draw the female body. The same guy also has a video for the male form and many other good drawing videos.

Instead of just copying the lines, (which is still a useful skill to have) it's better to understand the structure so you can make it look more 3d even without much shading and draw it in different positions than your reference gives you. Because this isn't a human, your proportions would be different, but the way you build the structures is the same.

Going with this :)

Best that there is always a baseline which one uses for measurements-the size of the head, for example, multiplied by 5 to about 6 (5 & 1/2) [including itself] measures to about a human body length. Proportions from a whole.

Just like how hands or feet were used as early measuring devices..
...Or that I've read too much from Da Vinci's notebook :P

I'm pretty unsure. I don't think its not safe for work when its an educational video which doesn't lean or emphasize the things which should be pretty much nsfw. But I didn't watch it yet. ...Ok I did and somehow I'm feeling that its a bit emphasizing, but..
I think there are other better videos that could portray drawing the human figure better. It seems..cartoonish(?). I mean, it's ok, but there are better videos and I'm pretty much being unsure here.

...Anyway.

First bother with the structure-draw the outline, then the details you want.

The shading comes with the lighting-you base on how dark or how light something is, from where the lightsource comes from and how intense the light is.

Okay.  Working on remembering how to draw various stuff.

I'm definitely better at drawing consistently than I used to be.
No other way to go than forward ^ ^

Only thing left to do is add more detail to the textures I think? But I really don't feel like working pixel per pixel, so I'm going to leave it at that.

All right.  Here's a couple of things to show how much I've "progressed."  Not that any of it is good, per se, but this is about progress, not absolute benchmarks.  If my art skill in high school was 0, it's surely something like -1 now.  But. . . here's some examples.

First, feature pieces from highschool-me's "portfolio;" i.e. 5 years ago, when I stopped producing anything:




Now, a curated gallery from our most recent effort: "Things Doodled When Vector Shoulda Been Working"

(Not featured: a multitude of Extreme Lack of Progress from Day 1)








Goals for next week's "art" recovery:

a. Draw a character in full body, possibly without hands if I'm feeling especially lame
b. Draw at least one hand on something, even if it is a chicken
c. Action pose!
d. Character with dark hair.  I drew some of those already, but I seem to have forgotten some stuff in the interim.

Goals for the week after that's "art" progress:

d. Try some costume design that's a little less dull idk
e. Scene with background and two characters, even if the composition is boring as fuck and no one has hands
f. LET'S HAVE SOMEONE WITH A FACIAL EXPRESSION JESUS CHRIST you know better than this
g. Work on your hair sectioning in general.  This is getting kind of embarrassing.

We'll see what happens next.

Vector, I don't understand why you're down on yourself? Aside from the lack of tonal values, the new faces are better proportioned than the old? Just practice grayscales for a day or two (preferably with HB lead, something softer than 2H) and you'll be better than you were before. Seriously.
